Baked apples, apple punch, and fire show — Advent market in Hanseatic Seehausen
The small Altmark Hanseatic city of Seehausen (Altmark) in the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt celebrates its Advent in a particularly unique way: Instead of a classic Christmas market lasting several weeks, it invites you to a one-day Bratapfelmarkt — annually on the Saturday before the 2nd Advent. The centerpiece is a specially built baked apple oven, where fresh, steaming baked apples are prepared on-site for visitors — filled with marzipan, raisins, and nuts, drizzled with vanilla sauce, the quintessential sweet classic of Northern German Advent cuisine.
The market takes place on Post- und Klosterschulplatz in the center of Seehausen. The square, framed by historic half-timbered and brick buildings, is active from 11 AM to 9 PM. Shops in the city center are also open until 5 PM — so a market visit can be easily combined with an Advent shopping trip in the old town.
Musically, the cover band Dein Puls provides the atmosphere — with a mix of 80s and 90s hits, Schlager classics, rock, and pop standards. A dance party in the open market square, where the audience doesn't have to stand still. A visual highlight of the day is the evening fire show: artists with torches, poi, and fire staffs create an impressive spectacle against the historic city backdrop.
For families with children, there is a children's train that runs through the market grounds, as well as other small hands-on activities. Right on time at 4 PM, St. Nicholas pays a visit — the ultimate joy for children in Northern Europe. Anyone driving their little ones that day has a complete family afternoon ahead of them with baked apples, a train ride, and a boot-filled treat.
Seehausen was once part of the Hanseatic League and, with its medieval cityscape, still shapes the northwestern part of the Altmark today. The St. Petri Church, a Gothic brick building, dominates the city skyline. In Advent, the town reveals its most intimate side: no large tourist crowds, but a lovingly organized city festival that the entire region participates in.
In 2026, the traditional market date (Saturday before the 2nd Advent) falls on December 5, 2026. The market runs on Post- und Klosterschulplatz from 11 AM to 9 PM. The detailed program will be published by the city of Seehausen in November 2026.
