Sea of lights on Paul-Lincke-Platz
As the days grow shorter in the Prignitz, Paul-Lincke-Platz in Wittenberge glows in the heart of the town. The Wittenberg Christmas Market has been a firm fixture in the Advent calendar of Northwest Brandenburg for years — for five days, the central square transforms into a small village of stalls, fairy lights, and fir branches. Unlike the anonymous large markets of the metropolises, Wittenberg retains its charm: personal, regional, with short distances.
The 2026 edition runs from Wednesday, December 9th, to Sunday, December 13th, 2026. Around two dozen stalls line the paths on Paul-Lincke-Platz and in the surrounding alleys. Classics on offer: mulled wine from regional distilleries, roasted almonds, gingerbread, stollen from Prignitz bakeries, plus arts and crafts made from wood, felt, ceramics, and glass — much of it directly from workshops in the region.
School and church choirs, trombone and brass ensembles, accordion and folk music ensembles from the Prignitz take turns on the stage. On the weekend, Santa Claus arrives, and there is a short children's fairy tale performance once a day. The exact schedule will be published by the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Department shortly before the market opens.
Wittenberge is located in the district of Prignitz directly on the Elbe, where Brandenburg borders Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony. The town was a railway hub in the 19th century — the historic station clock in the cityscape is a testament to this — and is now the gateway to the Elbe valley. Those visiting the Christmas market should plan a walk along the Elbe promenade: the illumination of the town center during Advent is among the most beautiful in Northwest Brandenburg.
A particular strength of the Wittenberg Christmas Market is its focus on regional crafts: basket weavers from the Wendland, glassblowers from Lauscha, woodcarvers from Spreewald, felt hats from Lower Saxony, beeswax candles from Prignitz beekeepers. Those looking for an Advent gift with a story will be more likely to find it here than at big-city commercial markets.
The complete daily schedule will be published on wittenberge.de from mid-November.
The detailed schedule will be published on the city's website shortly before the market. The structure follows previous years:
Stalls and Booths: basket weavers, glassblowers, woodcarvers, felt hats, beeswax candles, beekeepers, bakeries from the Prignitz; mulled wine, punch, roasted almonds, gingerbread, bratwurst.
Train: ICE/IC directly to Wittenberge from Berlin (approx. 1:00 h) or Hamburg (approx. 1:45 h), then approx. 10 min. walk from the station to Paul-Lincke-Platz. By car: A14 exit Karstädt or B189 from the south.
Free admission.
The market is most beautiful on weekday evenings — shorter queues, a calm atmosphere, and full of magical lights. On weekends, the stage programs are more crowded.
