Season-Opening Steam Weekend with Steam Locomotive Emma
Wittenberge is the largest town in the Prignitz region in northwestern Brandenburg, located on the Elbe river and at the intersection of important railway lines (Hamburg-Berlin connection, Berlin-Hamburg line). In the 19th and 20th centuries, railway workshops, steel construction, and the wool industry (Singer sewing machine factory) shaped the town. The railway heritage is still visible today — the Historic Engine Shed is its most impressive testament.
The Historic Engine Shed Wittenberge is a preserved roundhouse complex from the heyday of steam railways. Steam locomotives were maintained, turned, and prepared for their journeys here. Today, the Dampflokfreunde Salzwedel e.V. association operates the engine shed as a museum and event venue. It houses several steam locomotives, including the steam locomotive "Emma," which is put into operation for the highlights of the season.
Spring Steam is the traditional season opener for the engine shed. In 2026, the steam weekend will take place on April 18th and 19th — Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM, Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM. The program includes rides with steam and diesel locomotives on the station tracks, handcar courses (railway hand-crank carts) for families, a locomotive parade where several locomotives can be seen simultaneously, and cab rides — you can stand in the driver's cab while the locomotive is running. Steam locomotive Emma will be in operation.
Prices: Adults €8, Children (3-12 years) €4, Family Ticket €20. Spring Steam is consciously designed as an affordable family offer. Those who wish to extend their weekend can combine a visit to the engine shed with other Wittenberge attractions: the Elbe Cycle Route, the Steel Works Museum, Singer Park. Wittenberge is accessible by ICE or RE6 train from Berlin in about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
