Saarpfalz Carnival with Tradition
In the Bliesgau – that gentle landscape of hills and meadows in the Saarpfalz district, designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – carnival clubs maintain a remarkably vibrant carnival tradition. Right in the heart of this region, in the municipality of Gersheim, directly on the German-French border, the Rubenheimer Carneval Club 1960 e.V. (RCC for short) organizes its two Prunk- und Galakappensitzungen – with the typical session opening at 7:11 PM, that sacred hour for carnival.
What is a Prunkkappensitzung?
Unlike the Rhenish sessions, where guard dances and 'Büttenrede' often balance each other, the Saarpfalz Prunkkappensitzung thrives on its stage show: multi-hour programs featuring dance troupes (Funkenmariechen, children's troupes, show dance groups), parody speeches with a local political wink, show acts with live singing, and musical accompaniment. The 'Prunk' (splendor) lies in the opulently decorated hall, the magnificence of the uniforms, and the elaborate choreography.
The Bliesdalheim Community Hall
The sessions take place in the community hall of Bliesdalheim, a district of Gersheim – a village assembly hall that is transformed into a carnival temple for the sessions. Stage, pennants, confetti rain, rows of tables with doughnuts and beer: anyone who has attended a Saarpfalz gala session knows that this is not just about celebrating carnival, but about making village community visible. Friendly carnival clubs from the Saarland and neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate also regularly perform as guest clubs.
The Rubenheimer Carneval Club
The RCC was founded in 1960 and is based in Rubenheim, a district of Gersheim, but organizes its major hall sessions in the larger community hall in Bliesdalheim. With over six decades of club life, it is one of the most traditional carnival clubs in the Saarpfalz district and a member of the Association of Carnival Clubs in the Saarland.
Embedded in the Gersheim Carnival
The gala sessions are the flagship event of a much more extensive carnival calendar for the municipality of Gersheim, published annually on the municipal website. This includes children's sessions, carnival parades in several districts, and storming of the town hall on 'Schmotziger Donnerstag' (Fat Thursday). Anyone seeking an authentic impression of Saarpfalz traditional customs outside the major cities will find it in the Bliesgau hinterland.
