Gourmet Delights in Baroque Blieskastel
Blieskastel is one of the most beautiful small towns in Saarland – with around 20,000 inhabitants in the town itself and its baroque old town around the Paradeplatz, characterized by noble palaces, neoclassical townhouses, and the central Schlosskirche St. Sebastian. The town is located in the heart of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau – that gentle landscape of meadows and hills that shapes eastern Saarland – and is considered a culinary flagship of the region. It is precisely here that the Wine and Cheese Market takes place every September.
Concept: Two Cultural Assets, One Market
The market is clearly designed as a gourmet festival. Wine and cheese have been among the most important cultural assets of European food culture for centuries – and their combination is a classic. Around 30-40 exhibitors present themselves on the Paradeplatz: wine merchants from Mosel, Saar, Rheinhessen, Pfalz, and – across the border – from Alsace and Lorraine, as well as cheese producers from Saarland, France, Italy, and Switzerland. Tasting is not only allowed but expressly encouraged – tastings and direct conversations with the producers are part of the concept.
Accompanying Program
Parallel to the market, the Kunstmeile (Art Mile) takes place – an open-air art market along the main streets of the old town, where regional artists display their work. The shops in the old town open on the verkaufsoffener Sonntag (Sunday shopping), making the day a compact mix of enjoyment, art, and relaxed strolling. For families, there is a children's area in the Markthalle with XXL Lego bricks – a practical feature to make the gourmet market family-friendly.
Saar-Lor-Lux Gourmet Axis
What distinguishes the Blieskastel market from the standard is its geographical location: the town is about 30 kilometers from the Mosel (Trier) and only 25 kilometers from the Lorraine wine region (Vic-sur-Seille, Marsal) – both wine-growing areas with their own distinct identity. The cheese traditions of Lorraine (Munster, Carré de l'Est) and the Palatinate also find a suitable forum here. Visitors to the market should extend their day: a walk through the baroque old town, a visit to the Schlosskirche, and a detour to one of the town's renowned restaurants will make the excursion complete.
A Growing Success Story
The market was launched in 2018 as the 1st Wine and Cheese Market and has developed continuously. In 2025, the 8th edition took place, and 2026 will be the 9th edition. The organizer is the town of Blieskastel in cooperation with Saarpfalz Touristik. The town has thus established a clear profile element alongside other Saarpfalz festivals (e.g., Bliesgau Biosphere Festival, Karlsberg Festival in Homburg).
