Carnival parade on Rose Monday with an subsequent open-air party on the village square
Rose Monday is the highlight of the carnival season in the Rhineland, and this day is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the southwestern foothills of Rhineland-Palatinate as well. In Schönenberg-Kübelberg, a municipality in the Kusel district on the border with Saarland, several clubs jointly organize a parade that draws full streets far beyond the municipal borders. Thousands of carnival-goers – many from surrounding Saarland communities like Homburg or Bexbach – line the route and celebrate along.
The program of the Rosenmontagsumzug follows a carnival dramaturgy marked by specific carnival times: The Warm-Up at 11:11 AM kicks off the day. Carnival enthusiasts, club members, and early risers gather on the village square or in the central festival tavern for an initial drink. DJ sets and themed songs provide the atmosphere. The Parade starts punctually at 1:11 PM. Floats from local clubs, decorated trailers from companies in the municipality, walking groups from schools, sports clubs, and neighborhood initiatives, as well as music bands, parade through the central streets, throwing candy and small gifts to the audience and creating a jubilant mood with loud "Helau" calls.
After the parade concludes, the action shifts to the village square, where the official Open-Air Party begins at 2:11 PM. A DJ booth, food stalls from local clubs, a stage for show acts and selected dance groups, and the obligatory mulled wine stand create a lasting festival atmosphere. Families with children, young people, and older carnival-goers alike gather. The party continues into the evening, forming the crowning finale of the carnival celebrations in the municipality.
Behind the Rosenmontagsumzug is a multitude of voluntarily engaged clubs. The carnival club, fire department, sports clubs, the rural youth, and schools from the districts of Schönenberg, Kübelberg, and Sand work together to organize the parade year after year. This broad participation is typical of the Fastnacht culture in the Westpfalz and ensures that the tradition remains alive and that younger generations grow up with the carnival tradition.
On February 16th, Rose Monday 2026 falls within a compact carnival week between Shrove Saturday and Ash Wednesday. The organizing teams of the participating clubs have been preparing the parade since late autumn: floats are being decorated, dance groups are rehearsing their choreography, and the catering teams are putting together the logistical concept for the open-air party. Several thousand visitors and a colorful procession with dozens of groups are expected.
