Model ships on the village pond — the former "Schinkenregatta" 14 days after Pentecost
The "Schinkenregatta" is a classic of model ship sport in the Duchy of Lauenburg — organized for decades by the Schiffsmodellclub (SMC) Gudow e.V.. Today, the focus is less on competition and more on the model ship display. On the village pond in Kehrsen, a "GUDOW course" marked by nine pairs of buoys is set up, which the model builders must navigate in skill runs without touching them.
The special thing about the model ship display: Everyone can participate. Children are given remote controls, practice under guidance on one of the model ships, and receive a captain's license as a souvenir at the end. For parents, there is coffee, cake, bratwurst, and cold beer at the stand of Landgasthof Meincke, right by the pond.
The SMC Gudow was founded about 50 years ago and is one of the oldest model ship clubs in southern Schleswig-Holstein. Members build all classes of ships — from historical sailing frigates to modern container ships in a 1:50 scale. The model ship display is the annual highlight where the boats from the club's internal workshop season can be seen in action.
Gudow is located in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg, about 35 kilometers southeast of Lübeck and 20 kilometers from Mölln. The municipality is known as a water sports and fishing destination in the region; the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park stretches around the Gudow lakes. The village pond in Kehrsen is located in the village center and forms the ideal backdrop for model boats — sheltered from the wind, clearly visible, and easily viewed from all sides.
Model builders from the Duchy of Lauenburg and beyond will display their ships on the village pond and navigate the "GUDOW course" with nine pairs of buoys. Children can steer a model ship under guidance; the captain's license is the award for courage and skill.
