Güster in the District of Herzogtum Lauenburg

Güster is a small municipality in southern Schleswig-Holstein, located in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg, southeast of Hamburg, near the Schaalsee lake and the Mecklenburg border. With around 1,300 inhabitants, Güster is typical of the rural region of the Duchy — a mix of farms, newer residential areas, and an active club and social structure. The 'Alte Schule' — the former school building in the village center — is now used as an event and community center.

A Summer Festival Supported by the Village Community

The Kinderfest Güster is a classic example of voluntary village work. The Committee for Social Affairs, Culture, and Sport of the municipality organizes the festival annually — setup, program design, supervision, and catering are handled by volunteers. The festival is financed by donations from the Güster residents: Weeks before the event, collectors go through the village collecting donations, and a donation box is available at the local Edeka Riesel supermarket. This form of citizen financing means the festival remains free for the children.

The exact program varies from year to year, depending on volunteers and the amount of donations. The event usually starts around 2:00 PM, ending in the afternoon or early evening. An event that shows how village communities can create an attractive family event with minimal budget but maximum citizen participation.
