About Herne mittendrin

On Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12, 2026, Friedrich-Ebert-Platz in front of Herne City Hall will transform into a culinary and musical city festival. "Herne mittendrin" is entering its third round and is gradually establishing itself as a fixture in Herne's late summer calendar. From 5 p.m. until midnight each day, food stalls, wine merchants from Rheinhessen, cocktail and spirits bars will open; music will play on the square in three evening slots (6:30–8:15 PM / 8:15–10 PM / 10 PM–12 AM). A seven-meter-high DJ tower will provide electronic sets exclusively from Herne DJs. Open-air, free, and outdoors — free admission.

Herne mittendrin — Late Summer Festival in front of City Hall

On September 11 and 12, 2026, the city festival "Herne mittendrin" will take place for the third time on Friedrich-Ebert-Platz in front of Herne City Hall. The organizer is Stadtmarketing Herne, which has created a low-threshold, exclusively open-air meeting place between the weekly market and mainstream concerts with this format. Two evenings, from 5 p.m. until midnight each day — eat, drink, meet friends, dance.

Three Music Slots per Evening

The musical structure is clearly timed: each evening features three consecutive music slots:

  • 6:30 PM - 8:15 PM — relaxed opening music, focus on food stalls
  • 8:15 PM - 10:00 PM — main program, more tempo
  • 10:00 PM - 12:00 AM — DJ sets, dancing atmosphere on the square

At the center is a 7-meter-high DJ tower (sponsored by Bilfinger Arnold), featuring exclusively Herne DJs — the lineup from previous editions included Carib, Sean Luiz, Two B, Niopix, and Steel. The musical motto is: "Music by Herne residents for Herne" — exclusively electronic. For the 2026 edition, the lineup will be announced by Stadtmarketing at the end of August 2026.

Culinary Delights — Street Food, Wine, Cocktails

The gastronomic offerings are diverse:

  • Street food stalls — from burgers and bratwurst to Asian bowls and vegetarian specialties
  • Wine merchants from Rheinhessen with selected vintages — wine has been a hallmark of the festival since 2024
  • Cocktail stands with Gin Tonics, Aperol Spritz, and classic drinks
  • Spirits, sparkling wine, beer, and soft drinks
  • Stalls from local businesses such as Steinmeister or Alte Drogerie Meinken

The Herne weekly market, usually held on Friedrich-Ebert-Platz on Saturdays, will be relocated to the rear parking lot during the festival weekend — market and city festival will thus directly overlap on Saturday mornings.

Friedrich-Ebert-Platz — the City Hall Forecourt

Friedrich-Ebert-Platz is the official center of Herne — in front of the City Hall, built in 1912, a representative brick building in a neoclassical-historicist style. The square is used daily for the weekly market, the Christmas market, and political gatherings. It is ideal for a late summer city festival with an open-air character: central, easily accessible, with the City Hall facade as a backdrop for DJ sets until midnight.

Herne — Large City in the Northern Ruhr Area

Herne, with around 158,000 inhabitants, is one of the former major mining cities in the northern Ruhr Area — located between Bochum and Recklinghausen, traversed by the Rhine-Herne Canal. The city has actively managed structural change after the end of hard coal mining: with the Cranger Kirmes (Germany's second-largest Volksfest), the LWL-Archäologie with special exhibitions, Schloss Strünkede, and a vibrant city culture scene. "Herne mittendrin" fits this profile — a modern, urban format that showcases the city's image beyond mining nostalgia.

"Slowly, it's Becoming Tradition" — The Third Edition

Launched as an experimental format in 2024, "Herne mittendrin" had already established itself by 2025. The organizers put it this way: "Slowly, the festival is becoming tradition." With its third edition in 2026, it can indeed be considered a permanent fixture in Herne's late summer calendar — alongside Crange-Kirmes (early August), Lichtraum Herne (November), and the Christmas market.

Herne mittendrin — edition 2026

Third edition of the Herne city festival "Herne mittendrin" on Friedrich-Ebert-Platz in front of City Hall on September 11 and 12, 2026, from 5 PM to midnight each day. Street food, Rheinhessen wines, cocktails, and spirits, three music slots per evening (6:30–8:15 PM, 8:15–10 PM, 10 PM–12 AM) with Herne DJs on the 7-meter DJ tower. "Free and outdoors" — free admission.

In 2026, "Herne mittendrin" will be held for the third time, solidifying its place as a late summer city festival in Herne's city center. For two evenings, there will be street food, regional wine, cocktails — and exclusively electronic music from Herne DJs on the DJ tower. The adjacent weekly market will be relocated to the rear parking lot, allowing market visitors to seamlessly transition into the festival atmosphere on Saturday.
