Summer Festival in Historic Walls
The Burgfest Kollenburg takes place in the Kollenburg castle ruins, which tower high above the Maintal valley near Collenberg in the Miltenberg district of Bavaria. The event is organised by the Burgfreunde Kollenburg e.V. association, which maintains the ruins together with the Bavarian State Forests. The festival combines the historic backdrop with a convivial summer atmosphere.
A Castle with Almost 900 Years of History
The Kollenburg was built around 1146 by the Reichsschenken von Schüpf, who were summoned to the Maintal valley by King Konrad III to secure imperial property. The name derives from "Colbo", a medieval mace, which still appears in the coat of arms of the municipality of Collenberg today. From the 14th century onwards, the Rüdt von Kollenburg family expanded the complex into a fortified castle in three major phases. With the extinction of the line in 1635, the gradual decay began. Today, the ruins are owned by the Free State of Bavaria.
Campfire Atmosphere and Refreshments
At the Burgfest, the Burgfreunde ensure that visitors are well catered for. A special campfire atmosphere with suitable music characterises the evening within the old walls. The festival begins in the afternoon and develops into a convivial gathering for locals and guests from the entire region as the evening progresses.
Historical Preservation in the Spessart Nature Park
The commitment of the Burgfreunde Kollenburg e.V. combines historical preservation with vibrant club life. In addition to the Burgfest, the association offers castle tours, for example on Open Monument Day in September. The location in the Spessart Nature Park, high above the Main river, makes the visit a scenic experience as well.
