As colourful as the night — 29 museums, galleries, and cultural institutions
Erfurt boasts an exceptional density of museums — from the medieval Augustinian Monastery, where Martin Luther lived as a monk, and the Kleine Synagoge with the Erfurt Treasure (UNESCO World Heritage Site), to the Angermuseum showcasing 20th-century modern art. The Long Night of Museums makes this diversity tangible once a year in a concentrated form: one ticket — one night — 29 venues.
The motto 'As Colourful as the Night' plays with the idea of a cultural treasure hunt through Erfurt's old town and districts. From 6 PM to midnight, participating venues open their doors for special guided tours, performances, concerts, and hands-on activities. A single ticket is valid for all venues, and free shuttle buses connect the locations.
The official opening in 2026 will take place at 5:30 PM at the Topf & Söhne Memorial Site — a central place for remembrance of the Nazi era in Erfurt. The industrial company located here once supplied the crematoria for the concentration camps. Today, the site serves as a memorial and educational centre.
Two premieres shape the programme: the reopening of the High Choir of the Barfüßer Church, a medieval monastery church that will be accessible again after extensive restoration work, and the new permanent exhibition 'Inter Judeos' in the Kleine Synagoge, which documents Jewish life in Erfurt before and after 1349. Both locations are part of the UNESCO World Heritage of Erfurt's medieval Jewish sites.
Many museums offer special family programmes: hands-on stations, torchlight tours for children, workshops in the city and art library, concerts at the Angermuseum. The ticket is valid for the whole family at a reduced price. Erfurt is the state capital of Thuringia — the Museum Night shows why it is one of the most culturally active cities in Central Germany.
The 2026 Long Night of Museums features 29 venues. From 6 PM to midnight, doors will be open — special guided tours, performances, concerts, and hands-on activities will take place throughout Erfurt's old town and some districts.
Two programmatic focal points characterize the 2026 edition: the reopening of the High Choir of the Barfüßer Church after several years of restoration, and the premiere of the new permanent exhibition 'Inter Judeos' in the Kleine Synagoge — both locations are part of the UNESCO World Heritage of Erfurt's medieval Jewish sites.
