Thuringia's largest old town festival around the historic Krämerbrücke — 49th edition 2026
The Krämerbrücke is Erfurt's landmark and one of the most extraordinary places in Europe: a 120-meter-long bridge over the Gera, completely lined with half-timbered houses and continuously inhabited since the Middle Ages. 32 houses stand on the bridge, housing arts and crafts, antiques, cafés, and galleries. During the Krämerbrückenfest, it is the spatial and symbolic center of the festival — residents open their courtyards, the shops celebrate, and street musicians play on the bridge itself and in the adjacent alleys.
The festival is set up over a huge area encompassing the entire historic old town: Krämerbrücke, Fischmarkt, Wenigemarkt, Anger, Domplatz, Theaterplatz, and Petersberg. Music, theatre, cabaret, acrobatics, and dance alternate on around a dozen stages. Artisans, potters, leatherworkers, and goldsmiths sell their wares in the alleys. The main concerts take place on the large squares — especially Domplatz and Wenigemarkt. The entire festival is freely accessible; only individual special events require tickets.
The Domplatz, with the spectacular backdrop of Erfurt Cathedral and St. Severus Church, is the main stage of the festival. In 2026, Joris (Saturday evening, 8:00 PM) and other renowned pop and rock acts will perform here. Before the concert, the square fills with thousands of visitors who use the steps of Erfurt Cathedral as a grandstand at sunset. The Domplatz is also the location for the spectacular «Dinner in the Sky» event: 22 guests are lifted 50 meters above the city with their table and chairs by a crane, enjoying an aperitif with a panoramic view of the old town.
The Wenigemarkt — right at the eastern end of the Krämerbrücke — is the family area with a children's program, fairy tale stage, hands-on activities, and afternoon theatre performances. The Fischmarkt, around the fountain, is the venue for jazz, folk, and acoustic music. On the Petersberg, high above the city, the festival opens (Friday evening) and features an open-air lounge with DJ sets. This spatial distribution is a special feature of the Krämerbrückenfest: unlike many city festivals, there is no dominant center, but a decentralized festival landscape that you can explore on foot.
Erfurt is the state capital of Thuringia and is geographically located in the center of Germany. With around 215,000 inhabitants and one of the best-preserved medieval old towns, the city is a tourism heavyweight. In June — when the Krämerbrückenfest takes place — the season is at its peak: city tours, cathedral concerts, Petersberg, the egapark in the south, the Augustinian Monastery (where Martin Luther lived as a monk) — all this can be combined with the festival concerts. Erfurt is conveniently located: it's an ICE train hub, the A4 and A71 motorways intersect here, and Erfurt-Weimar Airport is 15 minutes away.
Erfurt has been celebrating its Krämerbrückenfest since 1975 — for the 49th time in 2026. From June 19th to 21st, the festival opens up the entire historic old town: Krämerbrücke, Fischmarkt, Wenigemarkt, Anger, Domplatz, Theaterplatz, and Petersberg. Music, theatre, acrobatics, and dance alternate on around a dozen stages. Artisans and regional caterers sell their goods in the alleys. The Petersberg opens the festival on Friday evening, and the Domplatz crowns it on Saturday with the Joris concert.
On Saturday evening, Joris performs on the Domplatz stage — the second Erfurt highlight of the 2026 Krämerbrückenfest program, with songs like «Herz über Kopf» and «Sommerregen» against the backdrop of Erfurt Cathedral and St. Severus Church. The festival opening on Friday features «Dinner in the Sky»: 22 guests are lifted 50 meters above the Domplatz with table and chairs by a crane and enjoy a 30-minute aperitif with a panoramic view of Erfurt's historic old town.
The complete program with stage plan will be published shortly before the festival at erfurt-kraemerbrueckenfest.de.
Admission to the entire festival grounds is free. Food and drinks are paid for at the stands. «Dinner in the Sky»: Individual tickets from €59 per person (1 hour, incl. drinks and snacks); group bookings for up to 22 people possible. Tickets via Erfurt Tourist Information, Benediktsplatz 1, or online.
Friday to Sunday, June 19th to 21st, 2026. Main program starts at 10:00 AM, concerts until after midnight.
