Consulates and cultural institutes open their doors — Hamburg's international evening
After Berlin, Hamburg hosts the most consulates in Germany. More than 100 foreign representations are accredited in the Hanseatic city — a legacy of centuries of trading history that has drawn merchants from all over the world to the Elbe. With the Long Night of Consulates, this international dimension becomes visible and accessible for one evening.
On this evening, consulates, cultural institutes, and representations open their premises. You can travel between the venues: from the Institut français in Heimhuder Straße to the Instituto Cervantes, then on to the Consulate General of Norway, the Consulate General of the USA, or the Mexican Consulate. Each venue offers its own program — readings, concerts, dance, tastings, film excerpts.
The central opening traditionally takes place at the MARKK — Museum am Rothenbaum on Rothenbaumchaussee. The former Museum of Ethnology is now Hamburg's venue for intercultural encounters and the natural kickoff to an evening when the world is a guest in the city.
The Long Night of Consulates is embedded in the European Weeks Hamburg, a multi-week event series centered around Europe Day on May 9th. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg uses these weeks to showcase its international connections — and the Long Night is one of the most popular formats.
Anyone living in Hamburg with an interest in languages, cultures, and international politics will find more than a dozen doors open on this evening. The event is free and straightforward — you can drop by spontaneously, let yourself drift, and discover what the consulates rarely present to the public.
The 2026 edition falls on April 30th, the eve of May 1st. The night traditionally opens at the MARKK Museum am Rothenbaum — formerly the Museum of Ethnology and now Hamburg's venue for intercultural dialogue.
The event is organized by the Hamburg Authority for Culture and Media in collaboration with the participating consulates and cultural institutes. The program for each venue will be published in the weeks leading up to the event on hamburg.de.
Full list of venues and detailed program: hamburg.de as part of the European Weeks.
Opening venue MARKK: U-Bahn (subway) U1 Hallerstraße. Most consulates are located in the districts of Rotherbaum, Harvestehude, and Eppendorf — easily accessible on foot and by U-Bahn lines U1/U3. Cycling through Hamburg's city center is feasible in one evening.
Free. Pre-registration may be required at individual venues — program available on hamburg.de.
Plan a route before the evening: Which consulates do you want to visit? In practice, you can manage 4 to 6 venues without rushing. Wear comfortable shoes and a coat — the night can be long.
