Franconian Kerwa on the first weekend of July
The Schönbrunn Kirchweih — Franconian Kerwa — is the convivial summer festival of the municipality of Schönbrunn in Steigerwald. It is traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday in July, together with the Kirchweih of the Steinsdorf district. For several days, it shapes village life with festivities, music, and traditions.
As in many Franconian villages, the Kirchweih is organized by the Kerwasjugend. They arrange the erection of the Kärwabaum, the Kärwatanz (maypole dance), and the social program. Thus, the Kerwa is not just a festival, but also a living village tradition passed down from generation to generation.
Schönbrunn is located in Steigerwald, a low mountain range in Upper Franconia characterized by forests and viticulture. Here, the Franconian Kirchweih combines ecclesiastical and secular customs: it originates from the consecration festival of the local church, but has long since become an intergenerational village festival with music, catering, and dancing.
Schönbrunn i.Steigerwald is a municipality in the Bamberg district in Bavaria, part of the Burgebrach administrative community. Besides Schönbrunn and Steinsdorf, other districts such as Halbersdorf, Grub, Zettmannsdorf, Oberneuses, and Frenshof celebrate their own Kirchweih dates throughout the year — a dense network of Franconian festival culture.
The Kirchweihen in Schönbrunn and Steinsdorf traditionally take place on the first Sunday in July. In 2025, this was July 6th. In 2026, the first Sunday in July falls on July 5th, so the Kerwa weekend is likely to be around July 3rd to 6th.
The Kerwa is organized by the Kerwasjugend with the Kärwabaum, dancing, and festivities. The exact program and exact dates are traditionally published at short notice via the municipality of Schönbrunn i.Steigerwald.
