About Kärwa Frensdorf

The Frensdorf Kirchweih is the main Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the municipality of the same name in Upper Franconia, Bamberg district (Bavaria). For four days, from Friday to Monday in September, the local Kärwa tradition comes alive: raising of the Kärwabaum (maypole), festival tent operation with Franconian live music, Betzentanz (a traditional dance) and Friedgebot (a ritual pronouncement) by the Kärwaboum and Kärwamoidla (young men and women) in Franconian costume, Franconian specialties, and the traditional Bärenausjagen (bear chasing) on Kärwamontag (Kirchweih Monday). A true Upper Franconian village Kärwa — integrated into the larger Kirchweih calendar year of the municipality of Frensdorf, which celebrates nine Kirchweihen in total: Herrnsdorf, Untergreuth, Obergreuth, Wingersdorf, Birkach, Reundorf, Schlüsselau, and Abtsdorf/Vorra.

A Franconian Kärwa in the Bamberg District

The Frensdorf Kirchweih is a prime example of the unbroken vitality of Franconian Kärwa culture. Frensdorf is a municipality in the Bamberg district of Upper Franconia (Bavaria), located southwest of the cathedral city, at the transition from the Steigerwald forest to the Aisch lowlands. As with many Upper Franconian municipalities, the Kirchweih is a central social event — four days that consolidate village life and simultaneously attract visitors from the wider region.

Four Days of Classic Kärwa Program

The program follows the established Franconian Kärwa schedule. Kärwafreitag (Kirchweih Friday): Raising of the Kärwabaum by the Kärwaboum, opening of the festival tent operation, beer tapping. Kärwasamstag (Kirchweih Saturday): Dance evening in the festival tent with live band, dance ensembles, or cover bands. Kärwasonntag (Kirchweih Sunday): Procession through the village, Frühschoppen (morning pint) with Franconian brass music, followed by the Betzentanz and Friedgebot by the Kärwaboum and Kärwamoidla in Franconian costume. Kärwamontag (Kirchweih Monday): the traditional Bärenausjagen as a humorous conclusion to the festival week.

Nine Kirchweihen in the Municipality of Frensdorf

Frensdorf comprises several districts, and each has its own Kirchweih with its own tradition and date. Throughout the year, a total of nine Kirchweihen are celebrated in the Frensdorf municipal area: Frensdorf itself (mid-September, the main Kärwa), Herrnsdorf (5–8 June), Untergreuth (10–13 July), Obergreuth (14–15 August), Wingersdorf (28–31 August), Birkach (25–28 September), Reundorf (9–12 October), Schlüsselau (9–12 October), and Abtsdorf/Vorra (23–26 October). Anyone wishing to experience Kärwa culture in the Bamberg region can visit a Frensdorf local Kirchweih almost every week from June to October.

Significance of Franconian Kärwa Tradition

A Franconian Kärwa is more than just a folk festival. It is religiously rooted (Kirchweih = consecration of the parish church), agrarian-craft-based (raising of the Kärwabaum, traditional costume dance), social (festival tent as a meeting point for the village community), and economic (revenue for local associations). In the Bamberg district of Upper Franconia, Kärwa culture is particularly vibrant — the "Kirchweih calendar for the City & District of Bamberg" documents hundreds of dates spread throughout the year.

Frensdorf, the Bamberg District, and Tradition

In the Bamberg district (Bavaria), Kirchweihen are not folkloric show elements but living practice. The Kärwagesellschaften (Kirchweih societies) are youth groups that pass on the customs. Bratwurst and beer stands are operated by associations, with proceeds flowing into local youth work, costume preservation, and community life. The Frensdorf Kärwa thus stands in a tradition that has survived in this density and authenticity only in a few regions of Germany.

Kärwa Frensdorf — edition 2026

The Frensdorf main Kirchweih 2026 will take place from Friday, September 18 to Monday, September 21 in Frensdorf, Upper Franconia — according to the Kirchweih calendar for the City and District of Bamberg. Four days of classic Franconian Kärwa program: raising of the Kärwabaum on Friday, festival tent operation with live music, procession on Sunday, Betzentanz and Friedgebot by the Kärwaboum and Kärwamoidla in Franconian costume, Bärenausjagen on Monday. Free admission, Franconian specialties, and beer service in the festival tent.

The 2026 edition follows the proven four-day Kärwa schedule. On Friday, September 18, the Kärwabaum will be erected and the festival operations will commence. Saturday and Sunday will be characterized by festival tent atmosphere, dance evenings with live music, and Franconian tavern cuisine.

The highlight is Kärwasonntag (September 20) with the procession, Frühschoppen, Betzentanz, and Friedgebot. On Kärwamontag (September 21), the festival week concludes with the traditional Bärenausjagen — a humorous custom where the Kärwaburschen, dressed as "bears," are chased through the village.
