When the Barn Becomes a Dance Floor

The Scheunenfete in Reesdorf is one of the most legendary events for young people in rural Northern Germany. Up to 2,400 guests gather at the Sellmer farm in the small community of Reesdorf, located south of Kiel in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, to dance in a specially converted machine hall. What usually houses horse stalls is temporarily transformed into a massive dance floor – a logistical masterpiece by the Flintbek rural youth.

Flintbek Rural Youth – The Organizers

Behind the event is the Flintbek rural youth, a volunteer organization of young adults from the region. A ten-member board spends months planning the logistics: power supply, security, sanitary facilities, catering, DJs, and decoration. The Sellmer family willingly provides their farm – a tradition that has shaped the image of Schleswig-Holstein's young rural society for years.

A Night in the Marshland

The Scheunenfete starts at 9:00 PM and lasts until deep into the night. DJs keep the energy high with a mix of current hits and party classics filling the hall. You'll meet farmers, students from Kiel, apprentices from Bordesholm – a diverse, closely connected community that embodies the village life of the Probstei region and the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. The atmosphere is authentically rural, with all the trimmings.

Reesdorf and the Hinterland of Kiel

Reesdorf is located about 15 kilometers southwest of Kiel, nestled in a hilly moraine landscape with lakes and forests. The Scheunenfete is part of a rich program of events offered by rural youth groups in Schleswig-Holstein and is regularly featured by the Bauernblatt (farmers' newspaper) and regional press.
