Six top-class classical concerts in spring in one of Schleswig-Holstein's oldest churches
The Bordesholm Monastery Church is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most important late Gothic churches. It is located in the center of the small town of Bordesholm in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, on the shore of Bordesholmer See. The interior, with its brick walls, wooden choir stalls, and high vaults, possesses acoustics that singers and musicians describe as exceptional — voices and instruments are carried softly without losing clarity or presence.
The Friends of Music in the Monastery Church association curates the program in close coordination with the Bordesholm Kantorei, the Lübeck University of Music, and regional organizers. The spring series combines concerts of high international standard (such as masterclass final concerts with renowned professors) with choral projects that have regional roots (Kantorei, 'Sotto voce' Kiel).
Bordesholm is a small administrative center with around 7,700 inhabitants in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. The town thrives on the lake, the monastery church, and an active club scene. Its musical tradition dates back to its monastic history — the former Augustinian canonry was an important religious and cultural center in the Middle Ages. Today, the Friends of Music association continues this tradition with a series of spring and autumn concerts.
The Spring Concerts are aimed at a classical music-loving audience but are deliberately accessible: ticket prices range from €15 to €20, with students usually admitted free, and the organ concert on May 2nd even offering free admission (donations requested). Those unfamiliar with classical music will find an ideal introduction here in an acoustically and atmospherically special setting.
The detailed 2026 program is fully published on the Friends of Music association's website (foerdervereinmusikbordesholm.de). Six concerts over four months, a deliberately diverse program ranging from Renaissance music to 19th-century classical music.
The organizer is the Friends of Music in the Bordesholm Monastery Church association — a dedicated group that preserves the musical tradition of the town and invites internationally renowned guests.
