Potash Mining in the Werra Valley — Tradition Since 1903

Unterbreizbach is located in the southwestern Wartburg district in the state of Thuringia, on the Werra River bend near the border with the state of Hesse. The town is closely linked to potash mining: Potash has been mined here since 1903; today's Werra Works of K+S AG is one of Europe's largest potash mining operations. The mining tradition shapes the identity of the community and its approximately 2,500 inhabitants — and the Bergmannsfest is the annual highlight of this tradition.

Ascension Day as a Festival Day

Like many miners' festivals in the region, the Unterbreizbach festival is celebrated on Ascension Day — also known as "Father's Day." In 2026, Ascension Day falls on Thursday, May 14. The festival day begins in the morning with the festival procession of the miners' band from the plant gate through the village center to the Cultural Park — many miners in the traditional black mining uniform with pickaxe and feathered hat.

Program in the Cultural Park

In the Unterbreizbach Cultural Park, the festival continues after the procession arrives: live concerts by the miners' band and other music groups, acrobatics and dance performances by local clubs, bratwurst and cake stalls, and draft beer. For children, there is a bouncy castle program and play activities. The proceeds from cake sales support the Miners' Association and its initiatives.

Miners' Association and IGBCE as Organizers

The festival is jointly organized by the Unterbreizbach Miners' Association and the Mining, Chemical, and Energy Union (IGBCE). This dual sponsorship is typical for miners' festivals in Germany's remaining mining regions — it combines the preservation of customs with union solidarity and a connection to the K+S works.
