Traditional fair on the third weekend of September — September 17 to 20, 2026
Unterbreizbach is a small municipality in the southern Wartburgkreis district, in the Werra-Main-Franconia region, almost on the border with Hesse and Bavaria. The Zeltkirmes (marquee fair) is its major folk festival of the year — a four-day event in the Franconian Kirmes style, with the typical customs that distinguish the south of Thuringia culturally from Central and Northern Thuringia.
In 2026, the event celebrates its 36th edition — a tradition continuously supported by the local Kirmesverein Unterbreizbach. Unlike many Western European city festivals, the Kirmes here is not organized by a city administration but by volunteers from the village — young and old residents who take care of setup, program, catering, and tradition.
The central traditions follow a fixed schedule: On Friday evening around 6 p.m., the Festbaum (festival tree) is erected in the village center — a young tree that symbolically opens the festival weekend. Afterwards, a large bonfire is lit (weather permitting), around which residents gather with the first guests. Bratwurst is grilled, drinks are served — and the festival begins in the informal style of a village gathering.
Throughout the weekend, there are live concerts with cover bands from the region, dance evenings on Saturday and Sunday, a dedicated children's program with games and a carousel, and a classic parade through the village on Saturday or Sunday. The parade combines the Kirmesgesellschaft Unterbreizbach (in some years supplemented by friendly Kirmes societies from neighboring villages) with floats, music bands, and traditional costume wearers. The association appears on Instagram as @kirmesgesellschaft_ubach.
The festival draws from the Franconian Kirchweih (church consecration festival) tradition, which is particularly pronounced in Southern Germany and Southern Thuringia. Unlike the North and Central German Kirmes tradition, the Franconian variant is closely linked to bachelor groups who take care of the Kirmes organization. This cultural background also shapes Unterbreizbach: Young men and women from the village perform as the Kirmesgesellschaft, organize the program, and ceremoniously gather in the center of the festival tent at the end of the event.
Unterbreizbach is small — around 2,000 inhabitants — and located in a rather remote corner of Thuringia. This makes the festival all the more authentic: Those who come here don't experience a major tourist event, but a genuine village folk festival with a long tradition. Arrival: A4 Eisenach, then B19/B84 towards Hesse. For hikers, there are opportunities to combine the weekend with hikes in the Werratal valley.
From September 17 to 20, 2026, Unterbreizbach in the south of the Wartburgkreis district celebrates its 36th Zeltkirmes. The festival begins with the festival tree on Friday evening, continues through the weekend with a parade and stage program, and concludes on Sunday evening.
Admission to the Zeltkirmes is completely free. Food, drinks, and carousel rides are paid for individually.
