Kirmes – the mother of all village festivals
The "Kirchweih" (Kirmes, Kerwa, Kerb) has centuries-old roots in Thuringia and originally celebrated the anniversary of a community's church consecration. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it became the social highlight of many villages – with a festival tent, carousels, dancing, showmen, and communal meals.
Sünna – Werra Valley, Salt, and Rhön
Sünna is one of the larger districts of the municipality Unterbreizbach in the Wartburgkreis district. The region between the Werra River and the Hochrhön is characterized by salt mining (potash) and traditional Rhön agriculture. The village communities actively maintain their customs – the Kirmes here is anything but just folklore; it's vibrant club life.
Five Days of Festival Grounds
The Sünna Kirmes program runs from Thursday to Monday and includes a festival tent, carousels, catering by the Sünna clubs, a dance evening, a morning pint (Frühschoppen), and a family program. It's part of a whole series of Kirmes festivals in the Unterbreizbach districts – Pferdsdorf at the end of August, Unterbreizbach in mid-September.
