Summer market for arts and crafts at the Stiftskirche Aschaffenburg
The Aschaffenburg Artisans' Market was launched in 1987 and originally took place in the castle courtyard. Since 2020, it has moved to the old town: to Stiftsberg, behind the town hall, in the immediate vicinity of the famous Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church) – one of the most important Romanesque sacred buildings on the Bavarian Lower Main. The relocation has given the market a new, more intimate character: instead of a spacious castle courtyard, several small, intimate spaces are now used.
The stalls are spread across various locations around the Stiftskirche:
This distributed arrangement has a special effect: visitors truly stroll from courtyard to courtyard, discovering the works in a setting that resembles a large open-air art gallery.
Around 40 craftspeople present their work over the two market days. Disciplines represented include, among others:
A small gallery along Stiftsgasse displays ceramics and sculptures, a cappuccino stand in front of the Alte Münze offers breaks, a hospice group sells donated items and lucky charms from exhibiting artists, and an ice cream stand by Daddy Cool provides cooling – often the most important stop on hot August afternoons. Refreshing cocktails complement the scene, depending on the program.
The market is part of the Summer in Aschaffenburg program, a series of cultural summer events organized by the city on the Bavarian Lower Main. The location at Stiftsberg connects the market with the Stiftskirche and the medieval city center – wandering between Schlossplatz, Pompejanum, Schöntalanlagen, Schloss Johannisburg, and Stiftskirche is easily done during the day anyway.
The city of Aschaffenburg (via mein.aschaffenburg.de and the city marketing Facebook page), the Andrea Müller Ceramics page, and the tourism portal tourist-aschaffenburg.de unanimously confirm the date August 8–9, 2026 for the Artisans' Market at Stiftsberg.
The format remains unchanged in 2026: around 40 exhibitors, three venues (Sahmsches Palais, Stiftsgasse around the Eulenbrunnen, Andrea Müller's workshop), a cappuccino stand in front of the Alte Münze, a hospice donation stand, ice cream from Daddy Cool, and free access. A detailed exhibitor list will be published on mein.aschaffenburg.de in the weeks leading up to the market.
