About Mayener Weihnachtszauber

The Mayener Weihnachtszauber is the central Advent market of the Vulkaneifel capital. On all four Advent weekends starting at the end of November 2026, the historic market square and the adjacent city center will be transformed into a festively illuminated Christmas world. Wooden stalls with mulled wine, regional Eifel cuisine, sweets, and handicrafts, a large Christmas tree, nativity scene, and a stage program with choirs and music groups create Advent atmosphere. Note: The traditional Advent market at Genovevaburg Castle will be cancelled in 2026 due to renovation work – the program will focus on the market square and city center. Free admission.

Mayen, the capital of the Vulkaneifel region, has developed a multifaceted Christmas event canon over the years. Traditionally, the Advent market at Genovevaburg Castle with its medieval flair and the central Mayener Weihnachtszauber in the city center share the task of shaping the Advent season. For 2026, however, the castle market must be cancelled as Genovevaburg Castle is undergoing extensive renovation – the entire Christmas program will therefore be concentrated on the market square and the city center under the title Mayener Weihnachtszauber.

The market square with the historic Old Town Hall forms the main stage. Festively illuminated wooden stalls are grouped around a large Christmas tree decorated with fairy lights. A nativity scene – usually lovingly set up by a Mayen community or school – provides the religious element. Shops in Bäckerstraße and the adjacent alleys participate with Christmas decorations and extended opening hours.

The gastronomic offerings are in line with what Advent markets are all about throughout Germany, seasoned with Eifel specialties: hot mulled wine (Glühwein) – also in a white version with Mosel wine, punch and hot chocolate for children, sausages from regional production, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen) with apple sauce, crêpes, roasted almonds, gingerbread, shortbread. The Vulkaneifel specialty Döppekooche (a type of potato and bacon casserole baked in a pot) can occasionally be found at individual stalls.

The handicraft offerings range from ceramics and woodwork to jewelry and textiles, candles, Advent arrangements, and small gift ideas. Local clubs, schools, and initiatives use the market for charitable stalls – a characteristic that particularly shapes the Mayen Advent atmosphere.

The stage program is performed by Mayen and regional choirs, brass ensembles, school choirs, and music associations. Classic German Advent songs, gospel versions, regional customs, and occasional pop acts alternate. St. Nicholas appears on December 5th and 6th with small gifts for children.

Those planning an Advent excursion to Mayen from the Middle Rhine or Mosel region often combine the Weihnachtszaubermarkt with a visit to the town church, a stroll through Bäckerstraße, and a stop at one of Mayen's brewery inns. The Eifel location makes Mayen a winter Advent city with a special character.
