"Schnüstern" – a Low German wordplay

The Low German word "schnüstern" is not familiar to everyone – it means something like "to browse", "to sniff around", or "to rummage". This perfectly describes the concept of the Esens spring market: a market for strolling, discovering, and lingering. From April 17th to 19th, 2026, the town centre of Esens will be transformed into an East Frisian flea market with a spring atmosphere.

The market offerings are classically broad:

• Flea market stalls: household goods, textiles, small wares, handicrafts
• Spring offers: seeds, spring flowers, garden decorations
• Showman attractions: rides, game stalls, carousels
• Gastronomy: typical market food, bratwurst, crêpes, sweets, drinks

Children's carousel and game stalls

A special programme is planned for the youngest visitors: children's carousel and game stalls – traditional market offerings that are part of the typical flea market atmosphere. This makes the Schnüstermarkt a family-friendly format that appeals to all generations.

Replacement for former autumn and Plattdüütsk market

The Schnüstermarkt is a relatively new event: it was introduced as a replacement for the former autumn market and the Plattdüütsk market. The move to spring and the new name – with the Low German "schnüstern" – are a conscious modernisation of the market concept while simultaneously connecting to Esens' Low German linguistic tradition.

Spring opener for the market season

With the Schnüstermarkt, the AEU Esens (Allgemeine Einkaufs- und Werbegemeinschaft - General Shopping and Advertising Association) opens the town's annual market season. What begins here in April continues in the summer with the Schützenfest, in autumn with further markets, and in winter with the Christmas market.
