Franconian Wine Festival along the Bocksbeutelstraße
The Straßenweinfest Markt Nordheim is one of the characteristic summer events along the Mittelfränkische Bocksbeutelstraße. On a July weekend, local vintners open their stalls along the main street and offer their Franconian wines: Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Domina, and Spätburgunder in the classic Bocksbeutel bottle.
The Bocksbeutelstraße connects Middle Franconian wine villages that traditionally offer their wines in the distinctive, flattened Bocksbeutel glass – a unique wine bottle shape permitted only in a few regions worldwide. Markt Nordheim, with its vineyards on the western edge of the Steigerwald, is one of the authentic wine villages on this route and preserves a vibrant viticultural tradition.
The festival opens on Saturday evening with the ceremonial barrel tapping by the Franconian Wine Queen. From 7 p.m., a brass band plays on the idyllic festival grounds, and local vintners serve exquisite local wines. The atmosphere on the summer evening, cozy seating, and meeting the vintners themselves contribute to the charm of the event.
Markt Nordheim is located in southwestern Middle Franconia, nestled between the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe in the Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim district. The market town, with around 1,200 inhabitants, is a special wine village in Middle Franconia – the Franconian wine region finds its northernmost foothills here. The vineyards benefit from the microclimate around the Aisch river and the sunny slopes of the Bullenheimer Berg.
The wines are accompanied by typical Franconian dishes: Bratwürste (grilled sausages), homemade Brotzeiten (bread-and-butter platters) with Franconian ham, cheese, and hearty farmhouse bread. A glass of Federweißer (young wine), if seasonally available, is also part of the wine festival culture. The event remains manageable and familiar – ideal for wine lovers who want to experience the Wine Queen, the vintners, and an authentic village wine festival away from large tourist crowds.
The 2026 edition of the Straßenweinfest stays true to the proven festival format: an idyllic festival square in the town center, wine stalls from local vintners, and a lively Saturday evening with a brass band starting at 7 p.m. The barrel tapping by the Franconian Wine Queen marks the festive start.
On Sunday, the vintners continue the festival operations: from noon, a Frühschoppen (morning pint) with brass music, Franconian snacks, grilled sausages, homemade cakes, and of course, wines in the traditional Bocksbeutel bottle. The familiar, village-based atmosphere makes the wine festival an authentic experience away from the major tourist streams.
