Kärwa in the Aischgrund
The Kirchweih Ergersheim is the annual patronal festival of the municipality of Ergersheim in the Central Franconian district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim. In Franconia, it's called »Kärwa« – a village festival tradition cultivated for centuries around the church's patron saint, representing one of Bavaria's densest festival cultures in the Aischgrund.
Course of a Franconian Kärwa
A classic Kärwa follows a set program: raising the decorated Kärwabaum (festival tree) on Saturday, a festive church service and 'Frühschoppen' (morning pint) on Sunday, a concert with Franconian brass bands, beer service in the festival tent or inn, Franconian sausages and pork knuckle ('Schäufele'), and the traditional Kärwatanz (festival dance) on Sunday evening with a live band or DJ. Showmen set up carousels and shooting galleries in the village center.
Ergersheim and the Aischgrund
Ergersheim is located between Bad Windsheim and Uffenheim, nestled in a hilly landscape with orchards and carp ponds. The region is famous for its carp farming – in the Aischgrund, carp is traditionally caught fresh and served between Michaelmas and Maundy Thursday. The district's Kirchweih calendar lists over 200 Kärwas between April and November for 2026, with a focus on summer (Bad Windsheim) and autumn.
Several Kirchweihen on the Same Day
The Kirchweih Ergersheim 2026 falls on the same Sunday as the Kärwas in Ezelheim and Krautostheim (both Market Sugenheim) – a typical phenomenon in the Aischgrund, where festival fans can visit multiple locations on a Kärwa weekend.
