Festival of Northern German Tradition, Culture, and the Low German Language
The Norddeutscher Tag focuses on Northern German cultural heritage: Low German language, traditional crafts, regional cuisine, Low German songs, and stories. The festival is held at the historic Festung Dömitz – one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in Northern Germany – in the Amt Dömitz-Malliß, Ludwigslust-Parchim district.
For one day, the fortress grounds become a Northern German craft market: basket weaving, pottery, wood and metal crafts, wool processing, beekeepers, culinary stands with traditional Mecklenburg and Elbe-region cuisine. The stage features a rotating program of Low German performances, folk music, dance groups, and readings from regional dialect works.
The Low German dialect (Niederdeutsch/Plattdeutsch) has been the everyday language in Northern Germany for centuries and is now protected as a regional minority language. The Norddeutscher Tag offers an unusually visible, accessible encounter with this tradition – not academic, but at a folk festival (Volksfest). This makes it one of the most important Low German-focused events in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's calendar.
Festung Dömitz is located directly on the Elbe River, in the southwest of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, on the border with Lower Saxony. It is easily accessible by bus, car, and bicycle. The Norddeutscher Tag regularly attracts visitors from the border regions of Lüchow-Dannenberg, Lüneburg, and Prignitz.
The festival is supported by the town of Dömitz, with organizational work handled by the Dömitz Tourist Information. Applications for stalls and program contributions are accepted annually until the end of May, and admission to the festival is usually free.
The 20th edition of the Norddeutscher Tag at Festung Dömitz will take place on Sunday, June 14, 2026, marking an anniversary occasion. From 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the fortress grounds will host a craft market with Northern German artisans, Low German programs on stage, regional gastronomy, and activities for families.
The Norddeutscher Tag is dedicated to preserving Northern German tradition, culture, and language (Low German/Plattdeutsch) and positions itself clearly as a non-touristy, authentic regional festival. Applications for stalls and program contributions are accepted by the Dömitz Tourist Information until May 31, 2026.
