Nearly 190-year-old market in Elsfleth with a parade, showmen, market stalls, and a festival tent — from September 11 to 13, 2026
The Elsfleth Market is one of the oldest folk festivals in the Wesermarsch and, with its 189th edition in 2026, is almost 190 years old. The market dates back to market rights from the 19th century when Elsfleth, as a seafaring town, held significant trading importance at the mouth of the Hunte River into the Weser. To this day, the market is a firm fixture in the city's festival calendar and is one of the largest folk festivals in the Wesermarsch district.
The 189th edition takes place from Friday, September 11 to Sunday, September 13, 2026. Three days of market, showmen, and festival tent operations in Elsfleth's city center attract families, club members, and onlookers from the entire region.
One of the highlights is the Market Parade on Sunday, September 13 at 1:30 PM, which traditionally starts from the Stadthalle. Associations, schools, marching bands, showmen groups, and floats parade through the city center of Elsfleth. The parade reflects the social fabric of the town and makes the communal self-image visible.
The official Market Opening on Sunday at 4 PM marks the beginning of the market's peak. Showmen set up amusement rides, game stalls, sweet, and snack stands. The offerings range from the Ferris wheel and bumper cars to children's carousels.
A festival tent with catering on the market grounds serves as the social meeting point for the festival community. Live music, beer, bratwurst, and North German specialties make the evenings the social highlight.
The market is traditionally combined with Sunday shopping: Elsfleth's retailers open their doors, and cafés and restaurants provide culinary catering in the city center. Admission to the market is free.
The 189th edition continues Elsfleth's centuries-old market tradition. Showmen from northwestern Lower Saxony and the Wesermarsch set up the amusement rides starting the Thursday of the previous week, allowing market operations to begin on Friday afternoon.
The market parade has always been the social highlight of the market weekend and reflects the market rights character of the festival.
