Traditional folk and marksmen's festival in the Land Hadeln municipality
Oberndorf is located in the vast marsh landscape of the Land Hadeln municipality, not far from the North Sea coast and the historic town of Otterndorf. Like many places in the region, Oberndorf has an active club life, in which the local marksmen's club plays a central role. The annual Volks- und Schützenfest is an expression of this connection between village community and tradition.
What's special about the Oberndorf festival: it combines the atmosphere of a classic folk festival with the ceremonial character of a marksmen's festival. On the festival grounds, visitors can expect rides, snack and sweet stalls, as well as a large festival tent with live music. In parallel, the shooting competitions for the crown take place, culminating in the proclamation of the new king or queen.
The parade on Sunday winds through the streets of the district. Marksmen in uniform, the marching band, friendly clubs, and the reigning monarch with her court pass by – a colourful spectacle that draws villagers to the roadside and is met with applause.
On Family Sunday, the King's Banquet is the centrepiece. Club members, honoured guests, and the village population are invited. For children, there are discounted carousel rides and a special entertainment programme, ensuring the festival is truly celebrated across generations.
The proximity to the North Sea coast, to Otterndorf with its historic harbour, and to the mudflats makes Oberndorf an attractive excursion destination for holidaymakers too. Those staying in the region during the festival should plan a detour to the Volks- und Schützenfest to experience the authentic Land Hadeln lifestyle.
The 2026 edition of the Volks- und Schützenfest Oberndorf continues the long-standing tradition. The programme includes the bird shooting with the proclamation of the new monarch, the parade through the district, a dance evening in the festival tent, and the Family Sunday with the King's Banquet and entertainment for children.
The festival grounds will be equipped with carousels, snack stands, and sweet stalls, ensuring a folk festival atmosphere. The immediate proximity to Otterndorf and the North Sea coast also makes the festival attractive for holiday guests.
