Halloween at the Zoo

The Neunkircher Zoo in the district of Neunkirchen, with its around 100 animal species and extensive park grounds on the Kasbruch site, is one of the most beautiful zoos in Saarland. Every year on October 31st, it transforms into a special kind of Halloween stage: Boo at the Zoo – a family Halloween day that merges the animal world with the American autumn festival.

Program for Brave Families

Instead of relying on cheap scares, the concept focuses on real animal experiences in a Halloween setting. The highlights:

  • Pumpkin carving with pumpkins from the regional Hof Guhl – children carve their own Halloween lanterns
  • Encounters with "spooky" animals – snakes, spiders, reptiles up close, with explanatory zookeepers
  • Giraffe feeding at 2:30 PM – a zoo classic, specially staged for Halloween
  • "Night Hunters" flight show at 3:30 PM – featuring owls and nocturnal birds of prey
  • Kasbruch witches – costumed animators who create the Halloween atmosphere
  • Twilight walk through the darkening zoo at the end of the day

Costumes Welcome

The concept thrives on participation: Costumed children receive free admission – an incentive that motivates most families to come up with creative costumes. From ghosts to witches, vampires, and skeleton pirates: the paths through the zoo become a catwalk. Those who want to participate in the costume contest pay a 2 Euro entry fee – the grand prize is a family annual pass.

In the Saarland Family Calendar

For years, Neunkircher Zoo has positioned itself as a family-friendly destination in Saarland, and Boo at the Zoo is one of the most successful examples of how a zoo can combine its educational mission with an event format. Instead of the generic spooky staging that many Halloween events offer, Neunkircher Zoo focuses on playful animal education: touching snakes, observing spiders up close, learning what our Halloween clichés actually mean zoologically.
