A Neighborhood Festival with Mining Connections
Heinitz is one of the southern districts of the district town Neunkirchen in the Neunkirchen district, shaped by former hard coal mining — the Heinitz mine was once one of the most important in the Saar region. The Parkfest keeps this memory alive and is also the most important social event of the district. It is organized by the AG Heinitzer Vereine (Working Group of Heinitz Associations), an alliance of local clubs — from the men's choir and sports club to the fire department.
The Bergfestplatz by the Outdoor Pool
The venue is the Bergfestplatz Heinitz, a green space directly next to the Heinitz Outdoor Pool. With trees, a lawn, and a small festival stage, the grounds offer a relaxed open-air atmosphere that clearly differs from city center festivals. On warm days, many visitors extend their festival experience with a dip in the adjacent outdoor pool.
Program Structure
The Parkfest follows a proven two-day format:
- Saturday — Opening around 4 PM by the AG Heinitzer Vereine, live music in the evening (in past editions, the guitar duo Smokin' Strings played, among others), beer service, Schwenker (grilled pork steaks) and sausages from the grill
- Sunday — Ecumenical service on the festival grounds, followed by a performance by the Shanty-Chor Neunkirchen starting at 11 AM, morning pint, family program, festival wind-down in the late afternoon
What the Proceeds Support
The income from the Parkfest benefits the maintenance of local cultural assets and association work in Heinitz — such as the preservation of historical memorials to the mining past and the promotion of members' club activities. This makes the Parkfest more than just entertainment: it is an expression of Heinitz's club culture.
Authentic Saarland in the Neunkirchen District
Anyone wanting to experience the real Saarland away from the Saarspektakel and the Völklingen Ironworks UNESCO World Heritage site will find it here. The Parkfest Heinitz is a typical Saarland neighborhood festival: not a tourist trap, but a meeting point for an entire neighborhood — with all the charm of mining tradition and vibrant club life.
