A day at the zoo where children run like ostriches, jump like kangaroos, and get glitter tattoos
The Neunkirchen Zoological Garden, with its approximately 500 animals spread over 16 hectares, is one of the most popular family destinations in Saarland. Chimpanzees, tigers, meerkats, seals, native wild animals — the range is vast. Once a year — traditionally on August 15th (Assumption Day, a public holiday in Saarland) — the zoo opens its gates for a very special format: the Zoolympic Children's Festival.
The concept is brilliant: Children receive a free activity card at the entrance and use it to explore the zoo. At various stations, there are tasks that recreate animal abilities:
Behind the concept lies a clear educational aim: while the children play, they learn incidentally about the movements, reflexes, and habitats of the animals. The zoo educators accompany them at the stations, explain, help — and collect the stamps on the activity card.
In addition to the Olympic program, there are extra activities:
Those who have completed all stations hand in their fully stamped activity card at the Zoo School. At 4:30 PM, prizes will be drawn among the participating children — and can be taken home immediately. The anticipation and crowd at 4:30 PM are legendary; many families plan their zoo day precisely for this moment.
The Zoolympic Children's Festival is free for participating children — however, the regular zoo admission fee applies. The activities take place in addition to normal zoo operations; parents can therefore relax and move between the tiger enclosure, chimpanzee habitat, and Olympic stations. The atmosphere is family-friendly and lively, with visitors coming from the Neunkirchen district, Saarbrücken, and neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate.
The Neunkirchen Zoo is located directly on the outskirts of Neunkirchen, nestled in a wooded hilly landscape. Those planning a full day with children can combine the Children's Festival with the nearby Saarpark-Center (one of the largest shopping malls in Saarland) or a trip to the Neue Gebläsehalle (industrial monument, occasional public tours).
The 2026 edition continues the successful format: animal-inspired activity stations, free activity cards, falconry station, dance and judo taster sessions, face painting, and glitter tattoos. Regular zoo admission applies; the Children's Festival itself is free and runs parallel to normal zoo operations.
