Pentecost cultural festival in around 100 churches in Berlin and Brandenburg
The Long Night of Open Churches is a comparatively young but rapidly growing Berlin cultural festival that opens the churches of Berlin and Brandenburg to the general public once a year on Pentecost Sunday. The organizer is the Ecumenical Council Berlin-Brandenburg – an association of 35 Christian denominations and communities that represents the diversity of Christianity in the region.
Throughout the evening, around 100 churches and communities open their doors. The spectrum ranges from famous Berlin main churches such as the Berlin Cathedral, the Marienkirche, or the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church to Orthodox communities and small village churches in the Brandenburg region. This makes the Long Night one of the few Berlin cultural formats that simultaneously covers the entire greater Berlin-Brandenburg area.
The program of the individual venues is as diverse as the communities themselves:
Unlike purely Protestant or Catholic formats, the Long Night of Open Churches is ecumenical in orientation: Protestant, Catholic, free church, Orthodox – all member churches of the Ecumenical Council Berlin-Brandenburg are involved. The festival is embedded in Pentecost Sunday, the traditional date of the Holy Spirit – a symbol of connection across linguistic, cultural, and denominational boundaries.
Admission to all events is free. The programs of the individual venues will be available online from spring onwards on the website offenekirchen-bb.de, sorted by Berlin districts and Brandenburg districts.
The Long Night of Open Churches 2026 falls on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2026. Around 100 churches and communities in Berlin and Brandenburg open their doors throughout the evening for a diverse program.
Traditionally, the night begins with an ecumenical service in the Berlin Cathedral in the early evening, followed by a musical program. The Ecumenical Council thus sets a central signal before the event flows into the individual venues.
The programs of the individual venues will be published online from spring 2026 and are sorted by districts (Mitte, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Neukölln, ...) and Brandenburg districts (Barnim, Havelland, Oder-Spree, ...).
Full program and list of all participating venues: offenekirchen-bb.de.
The events are spread across the entire city and the Brandenburg region. Public transport (S-Bahn, U-Bahn, bus) serves almost all venues. For the events in Brandenburg, regional or S-Bahn trains are sometimes required.
Free admission to all events.
Usually with an ecumenical service in the Berlin Cathedral in the early evening; most venues are open until midnight at the latest.
