City-wide Ecumenical Cultural Festival

The Long Night of Open Churches is a comparatively young but rapidly growing Berlin cultural festival that opens the churches of Berlin and Brandenburg to the general public once a year on Pentecost Sunday. The organizer is the Ecumenical Council Berlin-Brandenburg – an association of 35 Christian denominations and communities that represents the diversity of Christianity in the region.

Around 100 Venues

Throughout the evening, around 100 churches and communities open their doors. The spectrum ranges from famous Berlin main churches such as the Berlin Cathedral, the Marienkirche, or the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church to Orthodox communities and small village churches in the Brandenburg region. This makes the Long Night one of the few Berlin cultural formats that simultaneously covers the entire greater Berlin-Brandenburg area.

Program Types

The program of the individual venues is as diverse as the communities themselves:

  • Concerts – from classical to organ music to jazz and world music
  • Organ tours with demonstrations of historical and modern instruments
  • Tower experiences with ascents that are otherwise inaccessible
  • Services and short worships
  • Discussions on theology, faith, and social issues
  • Tours of church history, architecture, and art
  • Interactive formats – singing, creative writing, quiet experiences

Ecumenical Character

Unlike purely Protestant or Catholic formats, the Long Night of Open Churches is ecumenical in orientation: Protestant, Catholic, free church, Orthodox – all member churches of the Ecumenical Council Berlin-Brandenburg are involved. The festival is embedded in Pentecost Sunday, the traditional date of the Holy Spirit – a symbol of connection across linguistic, cultural, and denominational boundaries.

Admission and Program

Admission to all events is free. The programs of the individual venues will be available online from spring onwards on the website offenekirchen-bb.de, sorted by Berlin districts and Brandenburg districts.
