Midsummer night market for St. John's Eve in Neunkirchen city centre
The night of June 24th has been a magical date in the calendar since the Middle Ages: St. John's Eve, dedicated to the patron saint John the Baptist, on the day after the shortest summer night. In Neunkirchen — the unofficial capital of the eastern Saarland — the Johannesfest with Mondscheinmarkt celebrates this tradition with an atmospheric evening market around the Stummplatz.
While a classic weekly market ends with daylight, the Johannesfest only begins when the sun disappears behind the buildings of Neunkirchen's city centre. The stalls — culinary specialities, crafts, gift ideas — are atmospherically lit with fairy lights and torches. Honey from the Saarpfalz district, cheese from the region, Mediterranean antipasti, Flammkuchen from the surrounding bakeries, accompanied by beer and wine from the Saar-Mosel axis.
The market activity is complemented by medieval tavern catering: mead, wild boar sausages, stew from the cauldron. Live music comes from the acoustic folk and medieval spectrum — Saarland duos, singer-songwriters, lutenists. A fortune-telling "Wandering Witch Sonja" reads tarot and palmistry — a highlight that fits the St. John's Eve tradition.
The highlight of every event is the fire show by a professional performance group (e.g., "Feuerplanet"). Dancing torches, fire-eaters, and burning fire poi against the backdrop of the historic Stummplatz — a powerful connection of ancient summer solstice symbolism and modern performance art.
The district town of Neunkirchen, with a population of around 47,000, is one of Saarland's medium-sized centres and the largest urban centre in the Neunkirchen district. Known primarily for its industrial history — the Stumm ironworks and today's Gebläsehalle as a spectacular industrial monument — it combines historical substance with vibrant city life. The Johannesfest is one of several city festival events per year organised by the City Management.
The date for 2026 is confirmed according to the event calendar of the district town of Neunkirchen. The exact programme with bands and performance groups will be announced in early summer on neunkirchen.de and via the City Management.
Specific artists and programme items will be published by Neunkirchen City Management in June 2026.
