Traditional summer funfair with fireworks on the Eisweiher fairground
The Neunkircher Kirmes is one of the great traditional funfair classics of Saarland. Every year at the beginning of August, the Festplatz Eisweiher (Eisweiher fairground) on Fernstraße becomes the focal point: rides, stalls, music, and fireworks transform the area into a vibrant microcosm that shines far beyond the district capital – visitors from the entire Neunkirchen district, the Saarpfalz district, and the Saarbrücken regional association make their way here.
Around 40 showmen are present every year, including six large rides and a dodgem car attraction. Classics like the Ferris wheel, carousel, and haunted house stand alongside modern loop-the-loops and high-thrill rides. More than ten stalls provide guests with bratwurst, fries, crêpes, roasted almonds, cotton candy, and of course, draft beer – and the unavoidable Saarland specialties, Lyoner and Schwenker.
The highlight of every Kirmes is the traditional opening fireworks display on Friday evening at dusk. Thousands flock to the fairground, standing crowded around the Eisweiher, as the sky over Neunkirchen is bathed in colour for about twenty minutes. Live music accompanies the spectacle on the central stage, where bands like the Zwoa Spitzbuam or Italian Schlager groups provide the atmosphere.
On the last day of the funfair, Tuesday, it's Family Day: all rides are half-price. Parents with children take the opportunity to try out all the attractions without the crowds – from the small carousel to the big loop-the-loop. It's the quieter, but particularly popular, conclusion to the five days of the festival.
The Eisweiher fairground is centrally located, just a few minutes' walk from Neunkirchen station. This makes the Kirmes easily accessible by train for visitors from Saarbrücken or Homburg – an advantage not every funfair in Saarland can claim.
The 2026 edition of the Neunkircher Kirmes spans five days from Friday, July 31, to Tuesday, August 4. As every year, the district capital Neunkirchen is the organizer; the exact stage program will be announced in the summer.
Around 40 stalls and rides are expected, along with the traditional fireworks on the opening evening and the Family Day with half-price offers on Tuesday.
The detailed stage program will be published on neunkirchen.de in mid-July 2026.
Admission to the fairground is free. Rides cost between €3 and €8 per ride. On Family Day (Tuesday), rides are half-price.
By train: ICE/RE to Neunkirchen Hauptbahnhof (main station), then about a 10-minute walk to the Eisweiher fairground. By car: A8 exit Neunkirchen, follow signs for Festplatz. Parking is available around the fairground and in the town centre, but can fill up quickly on busy days.
Admission to the fairground is free. Rides and food are priced individually. On Family Day (Tuesday), all carousels are half-price.
Hotels in Neunkirchen-Mitte or in neighbouring Homburg (15 minutes by train). Those exploring Saarland over a weekend can combine the Kirmes with a visit to the Saarschleife (Saar Loop) or the Völklinger Hütte (Völklingen Ironworks).
Arrive early on Friday evening – the fireworks attract thousands of visitors, and the best spots with a clear view are occupied from 8 PM onwards.
