Lantern procession with Saint Martin on horseback between tigers and tiger sisters
The Sankt Martin procession at Neunkircher Zoo is one of the most unusual St. Martin's celebrations in the greater region. While most lantern processions wind through city streets and schoolyards, the Saarland's Saint Martin marches through a zoo here: past the Sumatran tigers, the Barbary macaques, the wolves, and the kangaroos. A tradition that has become a firm fixture in the Saarland family calendar in November for years.
The zoo opens its gates at 4 p.m. for families — admission is free until 5:15 p.m. During this time, visitors can see the animals, walk around with their homemade lanterns, and enjoy the typical pre-procession atmosphere. At 5:30 p.m., the lantern procession begins — led by Saint Martin on horseback, followed by hundreds of children with their lanterns, parents, and grandparents.
The highlight at the end of the procession is the large St. Martin's bonfire on the zoo grounds. In front of the crackling fire, the legend of Saint Martin is told: how the Roman soldier shared his cloak with a beggar — a story that generations of Saarland children know. Afterwards, there are St. Martin's pretzels, which can be pre-ordered via tickets and whose proceeds go to charity.
For parents and grandparents, mulled wine, non-alcoholic children's punch, and grilled specialties are served after the procession. The atmosphere is familial and contemplative; many families return year after year. The gathering continues in front of the fire and on the zoo grounds until 7 p.m.
In Saarland — with its predominantly Catholic population — Sankt Martin is an important saint in folk customs. Practically every parish and every kindergarten organizes a St. Martin's procession. What makes the version at Neunkircher Zoo special is the combination of Christian tradition, wildlife, and supra-regional appeal: families from all over Saarland, from Lorraine, and from the Palatinate come for the procession.
As with many procession events, the Volunteer Fire Brigades of the region secure the routes and the St. Martin's bonfire. Their presence is not just logistical but also a visible part of Saarland's club life.
The date follows the annual tradition: second Thursday in November. The exact program will be published in late summer 2026 on neunkircherzoo.de. St. Martin's pretzels available for pre-order ensure the annual charity donation.
