About Lange Tafel Kettwig

On Sunday, September 6, 2026, the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Kettwig e.V. invites you to the Lange Tafel (Long Table) in the Old Town of Essen-Kettwig from 12 PM to 5 PM. Beer garden tables lined up create a continuous festive table on the meadow in front of the Evangelische Marktkirche, where neighbors, clubs, families, business people, and restaurateurs can sit together, picnic, share stories, and spend the Sunday afternoon in one of the most beautiful old towns in the Ruhr area. Tables can be reserved online for €40. Walk-act performers and live music (often from local schools and music schools) provide the cultural accompaniment. A festival that focuses on encounters and local identity — not on commerce.

Essen-Kettwig — the most beautiful old town in the Ruhr area

Essen-Kettwig is the southernmost district of Essen, located directly on the Ruhr river and incorporated in 1975. Strolling through the narrow alleys of the Kettwig Old Town, you quickly forget you're in the Ruhr area: half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, the Evangelische Marktkirche (13th century), the historic Alte Kirche (Old Church), and the view of the Ruhr bridge give Kettwig the charm of an independent small town. This special identity has been cultivated by the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Kettwig e.V. for decades with a series of local festivals — and the Heimatfest with Lange Tafel is one of its most original formats.

The Idea — Long Table Instead of Food Stalls

Unlike the classic local festival with stalls, stages, and market stands, the Lange Tafel relies on a simple yet effective concept: beer garden tables are set up in a long row on the meadow in front of the Marktkirche — a continuous festive table that focuses on eating, drinking, and chatting together. Those who reserve a table bring their own table decorations, their own food, their own company — and share the afternoon with neighbors, club friends, family members, or business partners. The format originally comes from French and Italian village communities and fits surprisingly well with the Kettwig Old Town atmosphere.

Who Comes, Who Reserves

Table reservations are available for €40 per table via the website kettwig.eu. Typically seated at the table are:

  • Kettwig Families — parents, grandparents, children with picnic baskets
  • Clubs — sports clubs, carnival societies, music clubs, support groups
  • Local Restaurateurs and Business People — for promotion and as an occasion for encounters
  • Schools and Music Schools — who often also provide the stage program
  • Neighborhood Circles — streets that book a table together
  • New Kettwig Residents — who are quickly integrated into the local life

Walk-Acts and Ambient Live Music

The cultural accompaniment to the afternoon is deliberately subtle: walk-act performers move through the rows of tables — musicians with small instruments, accordionists, mobile brass groups, possibly stilt walkers. Local schools and music schools perform short sets on a small stage, ensuring that Kettwig's youth also have a place in the festival. The volume and program are dosed so that conversations at the tables remain possible — the festival is not a stage show, but a table community.

Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Kettwig e.V.

The organizer is the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Kettwig e.V., one of the oldest and most active civic associations in southern Essen. The HVV organizes several local festivals throughout the year (Kettwig Summer Festival in June, Wine Festival in May, Heimatfest in September), night watchman tours through the old town, sculpture park tours, and cultural events. The association sees itself as a civil society custodian of Kettwig's identity — and the Lange Tafel is perhaps its most original format.

Discover the Old Town and Ruhr After the Festival

If you don't want to go home after the table: A walk through the Kettwig Old Town down to the Ruhr Bridge and along the Ruhrtalradweg (Ruhr Valley Cycle Path) is a worthwhile conclusion. If you like, combine the festival with the Ruhr Cycle Path, a hike at Lake Baldeney, or a visit to the nearby Vondern Castle.
