Rocktober — The Festival Finale in Kettwig

Essen-Kettwig hosts three major district festivals, all organized by the Aktionsgemeinschaft AGIL: the Summer Festival in July, the Fountain Festival in September, and Rocktober in October. Rocktober concludes the festival summer — as the first autumn days drift over the Ruhr, Rathausplatz is once again transformed into a stage. Unlike the first two festivals, Rocktober has a clear musical direction: rock, covers, occasional 80s/90s theme nights — a concept that appeals to Kettwig residents of all ages.

Two Squares, Three Days

The festival takes place on two central squares in Kettwig's old town: Rathausplatz as the main music stage and Märchenbrunnenplatz as the area for food trucks and the wine garden. On Friday and Saturday, the grounds open at 3 PM and run until 10 PM; on Sunday, the program starts at 1 PM and ends at 8 PM. Those familiar with Kettwig know the ritual: after a family stroll along the Ruhr riverbank, enjoy a beer with live band accompaniment at Rathausplatz.

Music Program: Rock, Covers, Theme Nights

The music program features cover bands and regional live acts. In past editions, bands like Hardweare (Friday, 7 PM), the Essen-based cover band Roxx (Saturday, 7 PM), and an 80s/90s theme party with Galant on Sunday performed. The exact acts for 2026 will be announced on the AGIL website before the festival. The musical profile remains consistent: rocky, melodic, crowd-pleasing — not an avant-garde concept, but a deliberately catchy live program for a broad local audience.

Gastronomy: Food Trucks, Sweets, Wine

Märchenbrunnenplatz becomes the gastronomic hub: food trucks offering international and regional cuisine, a stall with sweets (crêpes, waffles, chocolate products), and coffee specialties at the espresso stand. The wine garden at Märchenbrunnenplatz is set up by the regional wine lady and the waterman, as during the Summer Festival. Additionally, there will be beer, cocktails, sparkling wine, and soft drinks.

Family-Friendly

Unlike pure rock events, Rocktober explicitly caters to families: a carousel for the youngest visitors, children's entertainment, and pony rides. Local retailers and restaurateurs complement the scene — many shops around Rathausplatz are open on Sundays.

Getting to Kettwig

By car via the A 52 or B 227 (Kettwiger Straße); parking available around the town center. By S-Bahn line S 6 (Cologne-Düsseldorf-Essen), get off at Essen-Kettwig station — about a 5-minute walk to Rathausplatz. The train journey from Essen Hbf takes about 20 minutes.
