Traditional May Day celebration in the southern Palatinate wine village at the foot of Landeck Castle
The May Festival on Karlsplatz in Klingenmünster is one of the firmly established spring dates in the Bergzabern region. On May 1, 2026, the Pfälzerwald-Verein Klingenmünster invites you to the central Karlsplatz. Wine from local vintners, draft beer, Palatinate specialties, and live music will accompany the holiday in the heart of the wine village.
Klingenmünster is located on the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest, at the foot of Landeck Castle and at the beginning of the Bergzabern region. The May Festival marks the start of the festival season and is a popular meeting point for the community's residents, as well as for hikers and day-trippers who begin their May walk to Landeck Castle or in the Palatinate Forest.
The Pfälzerwald-Verein (PWV) Klingenmünster is one of the most traditional hiking associations in the region. The association maintains the hiking trails around Landeck Castle, organizes guided hikes, and hosts the May Festival on Karlsplatz as a social highlight of its activities. Members and volunteers take care of the bar, kitchen, and program.
Karlsplatz is the central village square of Klingenmünster, surrounded by historic houses and the entrance to the monastery and church complex. During the May Festival, the square is used for a festival tent, bar, seating areas, and a stage. The atmosphere is family-friendly, and the format suits the size of the wine village.
The Klingenmünster vintners serve their white, rosé, and red wines, along with draft beer and non-alcoholic drinks. Classic Palatinate specialties are offered at the food stalls: Saumagen, Bratwurst, Leberknödel, Flammkuchen. Coffee and cake round off the offerings.
Klingenmünster is one of the oldest monastery towns in the Palatinate. The former Benedictine abbey shapes the townscape just as much as Landeck Castle, which towers over the village on a hill. A marked hiking trail to the castle starts from Karlsplatz (approx. 30 minutes). Many May Festival visitors combine their visit to the festival with a hike to the keep of Landeck, which offers a wide view over the Rhine plain and the Vosges mountains.
Free admission, family-friendly atmosphere, Palatinate cuisine, and wine service. Many visitors combine the May Festival with a hike to Landeck Castle (approx. 30 minutes walk from Karlsplatz). The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
