Franconian Kärwa in Nuremberg
The Kirchweih Mögeldorf — "Kärwa" in the Franconian dialect — is one of Nuremberg's most traditional district festivals. Unlike the city's major folk festivals, the focus here is on old Franconian Kirchweih customs, upheld by the young men and women of the district.
Pentecost at the Festival Grounds
Over the Pentecost weekend, the Kärwa enlivens the festival grounds at Satzinger Mühle on Kirchenberg. The program follows the traditional schedule of a Franconian Kärwa:
- Beer tapping ceremony with the marksmen and an association evening to kick things off
- Traditional Kärwazug (parade) through the district
- Beer Olympics and evening party
- Lunch and social gathering
- Festive church service, lunch, and dancing with lively music to conclude
Customs upheld by the Kärwabuam
The Kärwa is organized by the Mögeldorf Kärwabuam and Madla. This voluntary commitment by young people ensures the continuation of the customs and makes the Kärwa a festival that fosters identity for the entire district.

Mögeldorf is a traditional eastern district of the Franconian metropolis Nuremberg. The Kärwa demonstrates that Franconian Kirchweih customs are alive even in a big-city environment, fitting into the cultural region of Franconia, where Kärwa and Kirmes traditions are deeply rooted.

The Kirchweih Mögeldorf 2026 will take place over the Pentecost weekend from May 21st to 25th at the festival grounds at Satzinger Mühle. The Mögeldorf Kärwabuam and Madla are the organizers.
The program follows the traditional Kärwa schedule: Thursday (May 21st) from 6 PM beer tapping with the marksmen and association evening, Friday (May 22nd) 6:45 PM Kärwazug parade, Saturday (May 23rd) 3 PM Beer Olympics and evening party, Sunday (May 24th) lunch, Monday (May 25th) 10:30 AM festive church service, 11:30 AM lunch, and 4 PM dancing with lively music.
