Four Days of Volksfest Funfair by the River Ruhr
The Fliegenkirmes Fröndenberg is the most important summer event in the calendar of the small Ruhr town — a traditional four-day Volksfest funfair held every year on the third weekend of September in Himmelmannpark. In 2026, the funfair runs from Friday, September 18th, to Monday, September 21st, 2026. Daily opening hours: 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
Himmelmannpark as the Funfair Grounds
The festive setting is Himmelmannpark at Ruhrstraße 12 — Fröndenberg's central park. The ample space allows for the setup of numerous rides and stalls without compromising the funfair atmosphere. Its location on the River Ruhr adds a special touch to the event — food stalls with views of the Ruhr are a Fröndenberg specialty.
Rides and Highlights
The 2026 rides include:
- Base Jumper — adrenaline ride
- Auto-Scooter — a classic with a strong family following
- Carousels for the little ones
- Shooting galleries and game stalls
- Food and sweet stalls
Program and Highlights
The four-day program follows a proven rhythm:
- Friday, Sept 18th: Mayor's opening at 5:00 PM, fireworks in the evening around 9:00 PM
- Saturday, Sept 19th: continuous funfair operation, live music in the evening
- Sunday, Sept 20th: 11:00 AM Church service on the Auto-Scooter — an unusual tradition where the Catholic parish turns the classic ride into a sacred space
- Monday, Sept 21st: Family Day with special prices on many rides and discounts at food stalls
The Name "Fliegenkirmes"
The unusual name "Fliegenkirmes" (literally "Flying Funfair") has traditional roots in the region: Popular explanations link it to the abundance of stalls and the lively activity, reminiscent of a swarm of bees or flies. The name is firmly established in Fröndenberg's local dialect and gives the funfair its unmistakable identity marker.
Fröndenberg/Ruhr — Small Town in the Unna District
Fröndenberg/Ruhr is a town of around 21,000 inhabitants in the Unna district in North Rhine-Westphalia, located on the southern edge of the Ruhr area by the River Ruhr. The town combines rural and industrial history — the Ruhr river and the nearby Möhnesee lake make it a popular excursion destination. The Fliegenkirmes is among the last major Volksfest funfairs in the southern Ruhr area, retaining its family-friendly, tradition-conscious atmosphere.
