The quiet Christmas market for people and dogs at Stummplatz
While most Christmas markets unfold their charm with Schlager music, mulled wine steam, and densely packed alleys, the Neunkirchen Dog Christmas Market takes a different path: it is explicitly designed for dogs and their owners. This means wide stalls, no loud amplification, a quiet atmosphere — and a range of products from dog accessories to homemade liver sausage cookies. 2026 will see the eighth edition.
The market originated from a cooperation between the district town of Neunkirchen and the Neunkirchen shoe store Itt, which originally had the idea: dog owners should also be able to bring their four-legged friends along during the advent season without the animals feeling uncomfortable in the crowds. The concept was successful — the market quickly attracted visitors from Rhineland-Palatinate and Alsace.
The stalls around Stummplatz offer, among other things:
For humans, there is mulled wine, children's punch, and snacks — all in a manageable format to maintain the market's quiet character.
To ensure the concept works, clear rules apply: All participating dogs need current liability insurance and valid vaccinations, they must be leashed and supervised, and owners must clean up after them. Aggressive or insecure animals should preferably stay at home.
The Dog Christmas Market falls on the last Sunday of the year with open shops in Neunkirchen's city center — shops around Stummplatz are open, so the market visit can be combined with a stroll through the city center. Free admission, the atmosphere around the festively lit fir trees at Stummplatz is atmospheric, but never loud.
Neunkirchen, the former steel city in Saarland, has developed into a surprisingly vibrant medium-sized town after structural change. Stummplatz in the city center — named after the industrialist Stumm family — is the heart of the pedestrian zone and is transformed into a small Christmas world during Advent. The district of Neunkirchen, home of the market, is one of the six districts of Saarland.
The eighth edition builds on the proven concept: a deliberately decelerated Advent market that takes the needs of dogs seriously. The organizers, the district town of Neunkirchen and shoe store Itt, are sticking to the quiet character — no music, wide stalls, controlled visitor flows.
At the same time, the last Sunday of the year with open shops takes place in Neunkirchen's city center. Visitors can therefore combine their market visit with a stroll through the shops around Stummplatz.
