Traditional Kirmes kick-off to autumn on Steinfeld's market square with rides, beer barrel tapping, and Apple Day
The Herbstkirmes Steinfeld is one of the largest Volksfeste in the municipality of Steinfeld (Oldenburg) and a firm fixture in the event calendar of the Vechta district. For four days, from Thursday to Sunday — and in some years even until Monday — Steinfeld's market square transforms into an area of rides, food stalls, and festively illuminated market booths. The timing around German Unity Day makes the Kirmes a popular excursion destination for families from Steinfeld, Damme, Holdorf, and the entire region.
The Herbstkirmes traditionally opens on Thursday with the start of the rides. On Saturday, the ceremonial Bierfassanstich (beer barrel tapping) is performed by the mayor or a representative of the municipality of Steinfeld, officially ushering in the Volksfest weekend. The market square fills up in the evening with visitors from the entire region, enjoying the convivial atmosphere between carousels and the beer tent.
Family-friendliness is a priority at the Herbstkirmes. On Saturday, a large Kinderflohmarkt (children's flea market) takes place, where children can sell their toys, books, and collectibles themselves. On Sunday, the Backhaus Steinfeld (Steinfeld Bakery) hosts its traditional Apfeltag (Apple Day): tastings of old apple varieties, freshly pressed apple juice, and oven-fresh apple specialties are part of the program. In parallel, local retailers open for the verkaufsoffener Sonntag (Sunday shopping).
A special feature of the Steinfeld Herbstkirmes is the Schlager-Bummelpass for children on Monday: with a discounted pass, children can use numerous rides at reduced prices — an offer that showmen traditionally provide at the end of the Kirmes to enable families to have an affordable holiday program.
With its combination of classic Kirmes, market offerings, and community customs, the Herbstkirmes Steinfeld is much more than just a Volksfest: it is a meeting point for clubs, families, and neighbors that shapes community life in Steinfeld. Admission is free; payment is only required for rides and food stalls.
With the 2026 edition, the Herbstkirmes Steinfeld falls on the extended weekend around German Unity Day. Four days of market square operations with large rides, children's carousels, food stalls, and candy stands are complemented by the traditional events: beer barrel tapping, children's flea market, and Apple Day.
The market square will be closed to traffic for the entire duration of the Kirmes. Setup and test runs of the rides will begin at the start of the week.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the municipality of Steinfeld in late summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
