Plattdeutsch Meets Rock and Pop

Plattdeutsch is a living language in Schleswig-Holstein, not a museum exhibit. Formats like Rock Pop Platt demonstrate this: the revue takes well-known German and international pop and rock songs, translates them into Plattdeutsch, and performs them as a stage revue. The concept is not new – Plattdeutsch cover versions of major hits have been part of Low German stage culture for decades – but the format appears surprisingly fresh in its combination of live show and village hall.

Havetoft – An Angeln Village

Havetoft is located in southern Angeln, in the Schleswig-Flensburg district, nestled in a gently rolling landscape with hedges and small lakes. The municipality belongs to the Süderbrarup office and is one of those small places where active club life and the Plattdeutsch language are still part of everyday culture. The Havetoft-Hostrup Citizens' Association e.V. is the driving force behind community life and co-organizer of events like this revue.

The Low German Stage Tradition

Schleswig-Holstein is one of the four German regions where Plattdeutsch remains a living regional language. Stage culture – from village theater groups to professional Low German stages like the Ohnsorg Theater in Hamburg – actively cultivates this tradition. Formats like Rock Pop Platt show that Plattdeutsch is not just the language of local evenings and farmer's theater, but can also reach younger generations if the right musical pieces are chosen.

Organized by Citizens' Association and Municipality

Without the volunteer work of the Havetoft-Hostrup Citizens' Association, the event in the small municipality would not be possible. The association finances itself through membership fees and events like this, which represent the maintenance of village community life. Those who attend the concert also support the cultural infrastructure of a rural community in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
