Traditional village festival day at the site of the historic 1850 battle
Idstedt is a small village in the Amt Arensharde district of Schleswig-Flensburg in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, about 15 kilometers southwest of Flensburg. With just under 600 inhabitants, Idstedt is a typical Schleswig Geestland community — fields, forests, small farms. But the name Idstedt is world-famous in Schleswig-Holstein: in 1850, it was the site of the Battle of Idstedt — one of the largest and most decisive battles of the First Schleswig-Holstein War, in which Danish troops defeated Schleswig-Holstein troops.
The famous Idstedt Lion was erected in 1862 as a monument to the fallen Danish soldiers and stands today at the entrance to the village — a bronze sculpture that has been moved several times in its over 170-year history (between Idstedt, Berlin, and Flensburg) and now stands again at its original location. Anyone visiting the Schützenfest should see the Idstedt Lion — it makes the festival day more than just a village celebration.
While the historical background shapes the village, the daily life in Idstedt is small-town in nature. The annual Schützenfest is the most important village event — organized by the Idstedt Marksmen's Association (Schützenverein Idstedt) and a tradition for generations. The festival follows the classic Schleswig-Holstein Schützenfest format:
Schützenfeste are a widespread tradition in Schleswig-Holstein — almost every village has its own marksmen's association and its annual festival. The roots go back to the 19th century, when the citizen marksmen's associations emerged as self-defense and social clubs. Today, they are primarily social clubs with a sporting focus — and the festival day is the most important date in the club's year.
The 2026 edition runs on Saturday, June 13, at the Idstedt sports field. The Idstedt Marksmen's Association (Schützenverein Idstedt) organizes the festival with the traditional Schleswig-Holstein Schützenfest format — shooting competitions in the morning, king's proclamation in the afternoon, and a festival tent program in the evening.
The exact program for 2026 will be announced by the Idstedt Marksmen's Association before the festival day. Inquiries can be made via the Idstedt municipal administration (+49 4625 8223306).
Admission to the festival tent is typically free or for a small fee. Shooting is subject to a fee according to club rules. Food and drinks are available for purchase.
By car: A7 motorway, exit Schleswig/Schuby, then take the country road to Idstedt (approx. 10 min.). Parking available at the sports field. By train: to Schleswig, then take a bus or car to Idstedt.
Admission to the festival grounds is typically free or for a small fee. Shooting is subject to a fee according to club rules. Food and drinks are available for purchase.
Anyone visiting the Schützenfest should see the Idstedt Lion — a bronze monument at the village entrance commemorating the Battle of 1850. Freely accessible, approx. 5 min. walk from the sports field.
