Open courtyards and cellar tastings around Pentecost in the Eller district
Eller, the eastern district of the municipality Ediger-Eller, lies directly at the foot of the Calmont, which is said to be the steepest vineyard in Europe with a gradient of up to 65 degrees. The location shapes the character of Eller wines: slate-mineral, clear, with pronounced fruit. Nine wine-growing families in the district cultivate a large part of the steep slopes together and decided years ago to organize their Pfingstweintage together instead of each holding their own small festival.
The result is a decentralized format: on the three festival days, all participating courtyards are open simultaneously, with designated tasting stations in the inner courtyards, old barns, or the wine cellar. Visitors move freely between the courtyards, often accompanied by a wine glass, which is obtained for a deposit at the first courtyard and refilled at all participating stations. This creates an intimate festival experience without a marquee or stage.
A highlight is the cellar tastings by candlelight. Several wineries invite visitors at set times into their slate vaults, which have grown over generations, and guide them through the history of the house, the vineyard sites, and the vinification. Those who are hungry before the tasting can find "Winzerbrotzeit" (winemaker's snack platter) in several courtyards: ham, cheese, bread, pâtés, and in the evening, warm dishes like Sauerbraten or Mosel rice stew.
On Whit Monday, the festival traditionally concludes with a "Frühschoppen" (morning pint/gathering) in one of the larger courtyards, sometimes accompanied by a brass band. The Pfingstweintage are thus both a tasting weekend for wine lovers and a classic village festival with Mosel family flair.
Pentecost 2026 falls on the weekend of May 23 and 24; the festival traditionally begins on Friday evening with an opening toast at one of the participating courtyards. Over the three days, cellar tours by candlelight will take place at irregular intervals, with times announced locally and in the festival flyer.
Those who wish to combine the Pentecost weekend with a hike will find ideal connecting activities in the Calmont climbing path or on the Moselle Trail sections Bremm–Ediger and Eller–Beilstein.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
