Medieval market surrounding the Plattling Nibelungen Festival
The Nibelungenmarkt Plattling is a large medieval market that accompanies the Plattling Nibelungen Festival. It only takes place every four years, making it one of the rarest and largest events in the calendar of the Lower Bavarian town of Plattling in the Deggendorf district. For the duration of the festival, the town square becomes the medieval »Pledelingen« – a historicized name that vividly signifies the town's transformation.
On the market, dancers, musicians, and jugglers create a rich historical atmosphere. The program includes children's events, fire shows, acrobatic performances, and staged combat. Local associations run medieval camps with food and drink, actively contributing to the market – a community effort involving the whole town.
The centerpiece is the theater production on the open-air stage: in 2026, it will be titled »Das Lied von Liebe und Tod« (The Song of Love and Death), with text by Teja Fiedler and directed by Andreas Wiedermann. Amateur actors from Plattling and the surrounding area bring the Nibelungen saga to life on stage. The market and the festival form an inseparable duo – the market provides the setting, and the festival provides the dramatic core.
Because the Nibelungenmarkt and Festival only take place every four years, each edition has a special character. The market traditionally ends with the historic cry »Hoch Pledelingen, hoch hoch hoch« (Long live Pledelingen, hooray hooray hooray). The market and festival are organized by the City of Plattling together with the Nibelungen Förderverein e.V. (Nibelungen Support Association).
The Nibelungenmarkt 2026 runs from July 23 to 26 on Plattling's town square, which transforms into the medieval »Pledelingen« for these days. Dancers, musicians, and jugglers create a historical atmosphere, complemented by fire shows, acrobatic performances, staged combat, and children's events. Local associations run medieval camps with food and drink. Concurrently, the Nibelungen Festival takes place on the open-air stage on July 17–18 and 23–25 with the production »Das Lied von Liebe und Tod« (Text: Teja Fiedler, Director: Andreas Wiedermann). The market traditionally concludes with the cry »Hoch Pledelingen, hoch hoch hoch«.
The exact times for the individual market attractions and performances will be announced by the City of Plattling in advance.
Plattling is located in the Deggendorf district of Lower Bavaria and is an important railway junction (Plattling station on the Munich–Regensburg–Passau lines). By car via the A92/A3 motorways. The Nibelungenmarkt takes place on the town square.
Entry to the market is free; separate admission fees apply for the Nibelungen Festival (open-air stage). Tickets are available from the City of Plattling or the Nibelungen Förderverein.
As the event only occurs every four years, early planning is highly recommended – especially for the festival performances.
