International folk festival in the historic moated castle of Mosbach's old town
Mosbach's moated castle is one of the most unusual festival settings in Germany. Nestled between the remains of the medieval town wall and the half-timbered facades of the historic old town, it forms a natural open-air concert hall. The acoustics are excellent, the audience sits on blankets on the grass, with a view of the town's half-timbered silhouette. You will hardly find another festival setting like this in Germany.
Folk am Neckar started in 2013 and was described as "world-class" by the local press RNZ at the time. Since then, the festival has developed continuously and is now one of the most renowned folk festivals in Germany. It is part of the Mosbacher Sommer-Programm — a series of summer concerts and events in Mosbach's old town from June to August.
The festival presents a carefully curated program. Goitse from Ireland are one of the most sought-after Irish Trad bands around — five virtuoso musicians with a modern approach. Skipinnish from Scotland combine Gaelic heritage with contemporary rock music. Timbreroots, JC & The Tree, Laura Cortese & Bert Ruymbeek, Luas, and The Led Farmers complete the program with Americana, New Folk, and Folkrock.
The festival features two stages. The main stage in the moated castle presents the bigger acts. A second, smaller stage is reserved for solo sets and more intimate formations. This creates continuous concert operation, allowing the audience to move between the two venues.
Camping on the festival grounds is possible (registration required). The festival's gastronomy is an attraction in itself: Folk festivals demand folk-appropriate food — grilled sausages, wood-fired soup, Irish and Scottish stews, a selection of whiskies with tasting sets, well-chilled beer, and wine from the Neckar valley.
Mosbach, with its well-preserved half-timbered old town, is an ideal festival location. The town celebrates its 1200th anniversary in 2026 (see Musical Market Square Festival May 16–17, 2026), and Folk am Neckar at the end of July fits perfectly into this anniversary year.
The 2026 edition focuses on two intense festival days — Friday, July 31, and Saturday, August 1, 2026. The festival thus follows its established format: concentration rather than dilution, quality over quantity. The two stages allow for continuous programming from approx. 4 p.m. until after midnight.
The 2026 line-up brings a wide spectrum of the international folk scene: from Ireland, Goitse (Irish Trad); from Scotland, Skipinnish (Gaelic-rock); from the USA and Belgium, Laura Cortese & Bert Ruymbeek (Americana / Folk Crossover), JC & The Tree (Folkrock), Timbreroots, Luas, and The Led Farmers.
