Lower Bavarian village folk festival with parade, beer tent, and Timbersports
Wallerfing in the Deggendorf district is one of Lower Bavaria's most traditional folk festival communities. For four days, the town on the south bank of the Danube transforms into a large festival – with a festival tent, parade, showmen, and the distinctive Timbersports program. The organizer is the Friends of Wallerfinger Volksfest association, which manages the festival together with the surrounding communities of Buchhofen and Oberpöring.
The highlight on Saturday is the grand parade with over 50 clubs, music bands, and traditional costume groups from Wallerfing, Buchhofen, and Oberpöring. Floats, marching music, and historical costumes characterize the scene. Afterwards, the procession moves to the festival tent, where the festival band (most recently Festkapelle Süß) gets the beer flowing.
The real special feature of the Wallerfinger Volksfest are the STIHL Timbersports demonstrations on Sunday. Professional lumberjacks compete in the classic disciplines: Stock Saw, Single Buck, Underhand Chop, Springboard. Few folk festivals in Bavaria offer a comparable spectacle – the Wallerfing tradition goes back to the region's sport woodchopping clubs.
On Sunday, a festival service takes place (in 2025 for the 25th anniversary of a Wallerfing priest's ordination), followed by a Frühschoppen (morning pint) and brunch in the festival tent. Monday is traditionally Senior Citizens' Afternoon with free beer and reduced prices for children's rides. The event concludes with Political Monday – a firmly established event type in Lower Bavaria, where CSU politicians (most recently Günther Felßner) invite to a political debate, musically accompanied by bands like the Wolfachtaler Musikanten.
Wallerfing is located on the south side of the Danube between Deggendorf and Plattling, in the "Donauschleife" – an integrated rural development region (ILE). The Lower Bavarian lowlands with their scattered settlements, traditional clubs, and the Danube as a lifeline shape the character of the festival. Those who stay longer can explore the Danube cycle paths and the Plattling floodplains.
