The Nibelungen Saga as an Open-Air Spectacle
The Plattling Nibelungen Festival is a historical open-air theatre that brings the famous Nibelungen saga to the stage. It takes place every two years on the open-air stage at Magdalenenplatz in Plattling, a town in the district of Deggendorf, Bavaria, which sees itself as the Nibelungen City. The event is organised by the Förderverein Nibelungen-Festspiel Plattling e.V. (Friends of the Nibelungen Festival Plattling Association).
The 2026 Production
The 2026 production is titled The Nibelungen – The Song of Love and Death. It tells the story of an invincible hero, two queens, and a conflict with a fatal outcome – dark, dramatic, and fateful. The script is by Teja Fiedler, and the direction is by Andreas Wiedermann, born in 1978 in Deggendorf, who studied directing at the University Mozarteum Salzburg.
Stage and Technology
Since 2018, the play has been performed on the new open-air stage at Magdalenenplatz with professional stage design and modern lighting and sound technology.
