Traditional lantern procession for children and families — supported by the fire brigade and primary school in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg
Norderbrarup is a small municipality with about 1,300 inhabitants in the Süderbrarup district of Schleswig-Flensburg, located in the historic landscape of Angeln. The region is characterized by agriculture — small farms, wide fields, small forests, and the nearby Schlei inlet. The village has an active club life, in which the Volunteer Fire Brigade plays a central role.
The Laternelaufen has developed its own tradition in many North German villages. Unlike the St. Martin's processions in predominantly Catholic regions of Germany, the North German lantern processions are often less religious than community-building: In the run-up, children make lanterns in primary school or at home, meet at the school gate, and walk through the village together. The lanterns, which mark the opening of the dark winter half-year, are an image that imprints itself on many generations.
The meeting point is the Norderbrarup Primary School, starting at 6 PM. The Norderbrarup Volunteer Fire Brigade secures the procession — this is important during the North German winter days, when it is already dark at 6 PM. The procession moves through the village center and then returns to the primary school. There, bratwurst, mulled wine for adults, children's punch, and small snacks await.
The Laternelaufen is part of a broader club year in which the Norderbrarup Volunteer Fire Brigade organizes several public events — the Christmas tree collection in January, the Fire Brigade Festival at the end of February, the Easter bonfire in April, the lantern procession in November, and the Christmas market in December. The fire brigade is thus much more than a fire protection organization: it is a central pillar of village life.
Anyone who attends the Laternelaufen — whether as a visitor from the region or as a family from the village — sees a scene that is still alive in rural Schleswig-Holstein: parents, grandparents, and children walk together with lanterns through the dimly lit village street, with fire brigade members in high-visibility vests and with flashlights providing safety escort, and warm drinks waiting at the end. This is village life as it has grown over decades and still works today.
The Laternelaufen 2026 takes place on Friday, November 6, 2026, starting at 6:00 PM, at the Norderbrarup Primary School. The organizers are the Norderbrarup Volunteer Fire Brigade and the primary school. The lantern procession goes through the village and returns to the primary school, where bratwurst and hot drinks are served.
